Police identify 16-year-old killed in off-road motorcycle crash Saturday
The Polk County Sheriff's Office has identified the person who died in an off-road motorcycle crash Saturday evening as 16-year-old Zachary Brennecke, of Des Moines. The initial caller who reported the accident, at 6:22 p.m., said two juveniles were riding motorcycles in an area near the 8300 block of Northeast 118th Avenue in northeastern Polk County, and one had been involved in an accident. The accident occurred just north of Northeast 118th Avenue and west of the South Skunk River, the release said.

Holly Snowgren died from severe injuries after being taken to a Des Moines hospital Friday morning. Police say her boyfriend, Derrick Earnest, killed her. He was the one that drove her to the hospital that morning.

Altoona launches new amenity to help get kayaks, canoes on the water at Spring Creek Park
Altoona launched a first-of-its-kind amenity on Monday that got the mayor on the water. City officials staged a ribbon cutting for the new boat ramp and launch on the south pond of Spring Creek Park, near the intersection of Northwest 80th Street and 30th Street Southeast. The launch is a track that lets riders in small boats, such as a kayak or a canoe, propel themselves into the water with handles on each side.
