Authorities identify man killed in Iowa motorcycle crash
POLK COUNTY, Iowa — Officials in Polk County have identified the man whodied in a motorcycle crash on June 2. According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Lynn Cooke, 63, of Runnells, was riding the motorcycle westbound near the 11200 block of Southeast 32nd Avenue before crossing the eastbound lane and entering the ditch south of the road.

Polk County Sheriff's Office Identifies Victim of Fatal Motorcycle Crash
(Polk County, IA) -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office is releasing the identity of a man killed in a motorcycle crash last week. The Sheriff's Office says 63 year-old Lynn Cook of Runnells died in the crash Friday evening. Deputies responded to reports of the crash around 9pm, after investigators say someone passing by noticed a light coming from the ditch near the intersection of SE112th Street and SE 32nd Avenue about 15 minutes southeast of Pleasant Hill. The Sheriff's Office says that person went to check on the light and found a motorcycle and an unresponsive man at the scene. First responders arrived and tried to administer life-saving measures, but Cook died at the scene. Investigators say alcohol could have been a factor in the crash and that Cook was not wearing a helmet.
Ottumwa Couple Convicted Of Tax Fraud
(Des Moines, IA) An Ottumwa man and woman have been convicted of tax fraud after investigators say they duped hundreds of immigrants and refugees. Investigators say Thein Maung & Phyo Mi ran a tax-preparation business out of their home, catering to meat-packing employees who spoke little English. Investigators say without their customers’ knowledge or approval, the couple included false credits and deductions to increase refunds. They did more than 16-hundred tax returns and claimed millions in residential energy credits. They also defrauded Iowa Workforce Development out of benefits payments. They will be sentenced in September.

Fatal shooting of man who allegedly beat woman and her child ruled justified
The shooting death of a 23-year-old Des Moines man last month was an act of self-defense, the Polk County Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. Law enforcement found Ezekiel Williams suffering from a gunshot wound near the 2200 block of University Avenue on May 20 after responding to calls of shots fired in the area. Emergency personnel transported Williams to Mercy-Des Moines Medical Center, where he remained on life support until his death on May 27, according to a previous news release from Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department.

Damage From Recent Rains Delays Central Iowa State Park Reopening
(Warren County, IA) -- A popular state park in Iowa remains closed due to recent heavy rains. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Lake Ahquabi State Park, south of Indianola will not re-open until mid-July. Heavy rain last week caused washouts and erosion. Parts of the park have been closed since last summer for upgrades. Crews have been working on roads and parking lots, upgrading campground electrical systems, and working on the beach house and lodge.

Police believe alcohol a factor in fatal single-motorcycle crash
Authorities have identified the man who died in a motorcycle crash Friday as Lynn Cooke, 63, of Runnels. Evidence showed that it was a single-vehicle crash involving only the operator, according to a Tuesday news release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Cooke was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and alcohol may have been a factor, the release said.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Another round of wildfire smoke has infiltrated the skies across central Iowa this week for the second time in under a month. Some of this smoke has mixed down to the surface, creating moderate to unhealthy air quality this week. This latest round of smoke comes from wildfires burning out of control in the eastern Canadian province of Québec. The round of smoke we experienced before Memorial Day weekend came from wildfires in British Columbia and Alberta.
