BAINBRIDGE TOWNSHIP — When gas and diesel prices spiked in September, it couldn’t have come at a worse time in pastoral southwestern Michigan. It was the peak of the fall harvest, so the cost of moving corn, apples and soybeans to market was staggering. The timing was sensitive for another reason. It was the final months of the election in the 4th Congressional District in Michigan. The high price of diesel was already an issue before the latest surge. Long-time Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga of Holland is being criticized for his support of the Trump administration’s military foray into Iran, which has slowed the shipping of oil through the region. The impact hit this corner of the state disproportionately because, while residents contended with expensive gas, farmers struggled with high diesel costs. The rising cost put a major crimp in the operations on Elle Johnson’s tomato farm in Bainbridge Township, which is eight miles east of Benton Harbor. “Everyone is feeling it,” she said. “It’s part of everything we do.” The race between Huizenga and his Democratic challenger, Michigan state Sen.
