Origin of Mysterious Tar Balls on Oregon Coast Remains Unclear
Authorities in Oregon and Washington are still investigating the origin of mysterious tar balls that have recently appeared along the Pacific Northwest coastline. These sticky substances have been observed from Long Beach, Washington, to Yaquina Head, Oregon. The initial reports surfaced on May 19, when various state agencies detected several tar balls near the mouth of the Columbia River. On Sunday, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife revealed that the substance is “petroleum-based,” hinting at a possible oil spill. However, the precise source remains unidentified. The agency anticipates releasing more detailed findings in a few days as crews continue to search for additional tar balls.
Columbia River flood prevention measure passing in early results
A measure to upgrade the aging flood prevention infrastructure along the Oregon side of the Columbia River was passing in early May 21 election returns. The Urban Flood Safety and Water Quality District bond measure was ahead 67% to 33% in results released at 10 p.m. Results will be updated in coming hours and days. Ballots postmarked by 8 p.m. on May 21 will be counted if received within seven days. The measure will raise $150 million to match $100 million in federal funds to upgrade levees, pump station and other infrastructure. Much of the system has not been improved since the 1948 flood that destroyed the former city of Vanport.
