On Tuesday evening, South Dakota voters rejected Amendment I, preserving expanded Medicaid coverage in the South Dakota Constitution if federal funding drops below 90%. Poll results showed 131,187 people, or approximately 44%, who voted Yes, and 165,391, or about 56%, who voted No on Amendment I as of Wednesday morning, according to the South Dakota Secretary of State's website. The federal government currently covers 90% of the cost of Medicaid expansion, while South Dakota pays the remaining share of 10%, meaning for every 10 cents the state spends, the federal government contributes 90 cents. What does this mean for South Dakotans? Since the amendment has failed, should the federal government reduce its 90% funding share, South Dakota would be required to maintain the expanded Medicaid program for lower-income individuals ages 18 to 65 who are at or below 133% of the federal poverty level, plus 5% of the federal poverty level for families who exceed eight people, according to previous Argus Leader reporting . According to the 2026 Poverty Guidelines for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) , that amounts to about $15,960 a year for one person, $21,640 for two people and up to
