Students open 30-year-old time capsule at Emerson Elementary School
PARKERSBURG — Students, teachers, alumni and administrators all gathered in the Emerson Elementary gym Wednesday as the school opened a time capsule from 1994. “I have some amazing fourth graders,” Emerson Elementary Principal Tabatha Efaw said. “They completely planned all of this. Independent candidate, Jon Rose, certified to run for Athens County commissioner
On Wednesday, the Athens County Board of Elections voted unanimously to certify independent candidate Jon Rose‘s petition to run for a seat on Athens County Board of Commissioners. Rose, a former Athens County EMS employee, will run against incumbent Charlie Adkins for the term that starts Jan. 2, 2025. Rose collected 308 signatures for his petition, of which 209 were validated. On his campaign’s Facebook page, Rose thanked his supporters. The deadline to certify independent candidates is May 31, according to the Ohio Secretary of State’s website. Any protests against an independent candidate must be filed by June 14.
New mural on East State Street
Mandi “Miss Birdy” Caskey’s outline for a mural on the East State St./Route 33 Underpass waits to be painted. On Monday night and during the weekend, Caskey completed the first steps in painting the mural, which was commissioned by Athens County Children Services. According to the agency, the mural will represent the Children Services’ history and recognize what the community does for each other, and for children.
Survivors to lead lap at Relay for Life of Washington County
BELPRE — Two local cancer survivors will lead the “Survivors Lap” during Washington County’s Relay for Life at Civitan Park in Belpre Saturday afternoon. The Grand Marshal is Belpre resident Jennifer Woodyward who was diagnosed with stage IV bile duct cancer in July 2023. Prior to her diagnosis, she loved to bike, kayak, swim or work out at the gym.
