Prep cross country: Top Sonoma County girls run well at national invites
Montgomery’s three junior stars capped their 2023 cross country season with some solid performances at national invites Saturday. Hanne Thomsen, fresh off winning her third straight CIF state Division 3 individual title, ran to a 24th-place finish at the 18th annual Nike Cross National event in Portland, Oregon, which features the top runners from across the nation. Thomsen finished the 5K race in 18 minutes, 11.1 seconds in wet and muddy conditions at Glendoveer Golf Course.

SRJC soccer: Bear Cubs men fall 3-2 in overtime in state semifinals
The magical season for the Santa Rosa Junior College men’s soccer team came to an end Friday night in the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association state playoffs as the Bear Cubs, the top seed from Northern California, fell to Cuyamaca 3-2 in overtime at Mt. San Antonio College in San Bernardino.
SRJC men’s soccer team advances to Norcal Finals
The Santa Rosa Junior College men’s soccer team beat Cañada College 2-1 at home in the second round of regional playoffs on Nov. 21. It was a very competitive match with multiple scoring opportunities, fouls and instances of players challenging each other for the ball. Both teams gave it their all, but the Bear Cubs triumphed and will be heading to the Norcal Regional Finals.

First Girl’s JV basketball game
On November 14th, the girls’ JV basketball team had their first game against Godinez at 5 pm. It was a tough game for Laguna, but the team did very well overall. The score ended up being 10-29, a loss for Laguna. As it is unfortunate they ended up losing, there are always more opportunities to win. Our girls’ junior varsity team shot some pretty good baskets that undoubtedly got the crowd cheering. It was an extremely entertaining game to watch without a single dull moment present throughout.

Prep cross country: Montgomery’s Hanne Thomsen joins elite company with 3rd straight state title
It’s a three-peat for Hanne Thomsen. The Montgomery junior star won her third consecutive cross country state title Saturday, running to a 22-second victory in the Division 3 race at the CIF championships at Woodward Park in Fresno. Her time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds was the fifth fastest across all girls divisions.
Cougars’ rally falls short
Jacob Pruitt was inconsolable last Friday night in the wake of Rancho Cotate High’s 14-7 loss to Windsor in the North Coast Section Div. 2 semifinal. Some of his teammates tried to buck up Pruitt, as did his coaches. Even members of the opposing team did what they could to lift the spirits of the Cougars’ starting quarterback but to no avail. What happened in the latter stages of this game simply cut too deep.
SRJC Women’s soccer team advances to round two of playoffs after beating Las Positas College
The Santa Rosa Junior College women’s soccer team beat Las Positas at home 1-0 in the first round of playoffs Saturday. The SRJC Bear Cubs took their first chance at scoring in the 7th minute when forward Taylor Gandy shot the ball that would have been the opening goal of the game but was saved by Las Positas goalkeeper, Mia Lemus.
