BIOGRAPHY: I am MaKayla Williams and this year I am a senior at Ayden Grifton High School, Ayden NC. I am the middle child of five with my 2 older brothers, Garrick and Tyler and younger siblings, Caden and Zuri. During my four years at AGHS I have done so many different things to include, JROTC, wrestling, and orchestra to name a few. I joined the US Army National Guard my junior year and graduated from BCT (Basic Combat Training) last Summer. I love debates and reading and aspire to be a lawyer following those interests. I plan to attend East Carolina University to major in Criminal Justice. I also plan to be in their ROTC program and commission to be an officer in the US Army.
Pedestrian badly hurt in hit-and-run on east side of city
Police are asking for the public’s help finding a motorist who fled the U.S. 64 interchange for East Raleigh Boulevard in the eastern part of the city after striking a pedestrian late Saturday night. Officers at 11:05 p.m. responded to the scene of the hit-and-run. The pedestrian was taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville with life-threatening injuries, police said. An investigation is continuing. Police said that anyone with any information about the incident is encouraged to call the police department at (252) 972-1411 or Crime Stoppers at (252) 977-1111. Tips can be texted to police at 274637 by beginning messages with RMPOL to direct the tip to the police department, and messages can be sent to police via the MyRMT mobile app.

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Fire crews are battling a blaze at one Eastern Carolina home Sunday afternoon. A house at 111 Leon Drive just outside of Greenville caught fire. Fire crews from Simpson Fire Department and Greenville Fire/Rescue responded to the home around 11:30 a.m. A ladder truck helped attack the blaze as flames burned the roof of the home.

BIOGRAPHY: My name is Murray Hughes and I am a senior at JH Rose High School in Greenville, North Carolina. I was born in Durham, North Carolina and moved to Eastern North Carolina when I was 10 years old. Upon moving here, I had the opportunity to participate in numerous activities that contributed to the person I am today. I became involved with my local Boy Scout Troop in Farmville, NC, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout last year. I am also a lifelong musician, and have played the double bass since the 5th grade. I have participated in numerous ensembles, including the JH Rose Honors Orchestra, the Eastern Youth Orchestra, and the Southeast Honors Strings Festival Orchestra. I also had the privilege of attending North Carolina Governor’s School West in 2022 with a concentration in music. I am an active member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church, and I serve as an altar minister and musician there. During my time at JH Rose, I have become involved with the Mock Trial Team, Future Business Leaders of America, Link Crew, National Honors Society, and the Varsity Cross Country, Swim, and Track teams. During my summers I can be found deeply engaged in experiences such as Tar Heel Boys State, Boy Scout Summer camp, or working as a laboratory assistant at East Carolina University. I have a passion for political science and government, and I will pursue those interests over the next 4 years while attending the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I would like to thank all my mentors, Boy Scout leaders, teachers, coaches, friends, and especially my parents, sister, and grandparents for supporting me along the way.

High school football: HBCU combine gives prospects two days with coaches, scouts
Football prospects from the immediate area and beyond converged on Farmville Central High School on Friday and Saturday for the ENC HBCU Combine & Showcase. The two-day event is follows a similar format to other professional and college combines where athletes timed in an array of drills and also receive instruction and motivation from coaches and former star players. This year’s event featured a pair of Black College Hall of Fame members. Prospects were evaluated in several areas, including the 40-yard dash, the 5-10-5 shuttle run, vertical jump, broad jump and bench press. Recruiters from the CIAA and MEAC conferences as well as Louisburg College were in attendance at the event.

BIOGRAPHY: My name is Cam Saverino and I am graduating from The Oakwood School this year. I am an avid runner and swimmer and have been training hard for a marathon coming up and a triathlon after that. I am hoping to major in gender studies at either UNC Chapel Hill, University of Michigan, or University of Vermont to gain a better understanding of traditionally marginalized groups and advocate for them in the future.

BIOGRAPHY: My name is Javiar Grady, and I am a senior at Kinston High School. I am the son of Donisha Grady and Javier Murrell. I grew up in Kinston for most of my life, but I spent a short part of my adolescent years in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I attended Northeast Elementary School for the majority of my elementary education and Children Village Academy from 5th grade to 8th grade. Since entering Kinston High as a Freshman, I have been involved in the Gospel Choir and Drama Club. I am also a member of the School Improvement team, and the Honors Society, and I serve as an Americorp Tutor in a math class. Additionally, I am part of the Marching Band, where I held the title of Brass Captain last year and currently serve as a senior Assistant Drum Major. In my free time, I am actively involved in church, particularly working within the music ministry. My plans include graduating from a 4-year university with a major in Elementary Education to pursue a career as an elementary teacher. Later on, I aspire to obtain my master’s degree in Administrative Leadership to become a Principal.
