Peoria takes new step toward passenger rail service
A plan to continue work on a proposed passenger rail line for Peoria was approved Tuesday by the Peoria City Council . The plan, which passed on a 9-2 vote with councilmembers Alex Carmona of the 2nd District and at-large John Kelly voting against, would allow the city and other stakeholders to begin work on developing a plan for service. It also will require the city to provide money to help match the funds coming from the federal government for the project. More: Peoria's pursuit of passenger rail will require more money than originally anticipated Those other stakeholders are Peoria County , the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and the North Central Illinois Council of Governments , who are working alongside RINA North America – formerly known as Patrick Engineering – to facilitate the plan, which will include drafting a purpose and need statement, engaging stakeholders, analyzing alternatives, planning for finances and environmental issues, setting up a governance structure and beginning to plan the implementation of the project. Step one of the project had already been completed, with the city having been placed in the Federal Railroad Administration's Corridor Identification and Development program in December 2023.
