A man was charged with driving while impaired and other offenses after police said he backed into an occupied vehicle unprovoked, fled the scene and was later tasered.

An incident report from the Greenville Police Department said that at 3:55 p.m. April 27, officers responded to the intersection of 10th Street and South Memorial Drive. A spokeswoman for the department said that a motorist had backed into a vehicle multiple times before he exited his own vehicle and left the area on foot.

Court documents said the driver dented and cracked the other vehicle’s front bumper, causing damage valued at less than $200.

The spokeswoman said as the suspect walked away, he was seen hitting vehicles with his hand and that he approached other drivers to ask for a lighter. He then ran away.

Officers used city cameras and witness descriptions to identify the suspect as Ashauni Hanson, 23, of 1307 Cotanche St., Greenville. They located him a short time later on Line Avenue, where he charged police and was subsequently tased. He was taken to ECU Health Medical Center via ambulance to be evaluated.

Officers rode with Hanson on the way to the hospital, where the spokeswoman said he continuously tried to get out of his seatbelt and at one point licked an officer who secured him in the seat.

Hanson had pinpoint pupils, court documents said, along with red, glassy eyes and slurred speech. A blood test was conducted to check for impairment. He was released from the hospital later in the evening and officers charged him with injury to personal property, hit and run leave the scene and driving while impaired.
