An odd discovery made at a remote pond in western Colorado is going viral online, with a local suggesting that items strewn about the area could be evidence of heinous crimes.

On May 9, western Colorado resident Levi Comstock took to YouTube in a video titled "Possible Killer on the Loose" to inform the public that he may have stumbled upon what he 'believes could be a crime.' Comstock reports that he's been finding pairs of boots and high heel shoes at a rarely visited pond located in a remote part of the Book Cliffs area, which is found near Grand Junction. In the YouTube video, he describes how he was in the area off-roading and exploring when he stopped to "take a leak," climbing over a fence and finding a first pair of shoes. He's since found at least 10 more pairs, all in styles that could be described as 'fancy' – undoubtedly bizarre considering the isolated location of the pond and how thick mud in the area is said to periodically prevent access to the spot. Based on Comstock's description, it sounds like this would be an odd place to spot anyone, an even odder place to spot someone in fancy footwear.

The discovery made by Comstock has captured the attention of internet sleuths, with the initial clip he published being viewed millions of times on various social media platforms.

"I don't know if we have a serial killer or what it is and I know this sounds like clickbait," says Comstock at one point in the video.

Comstock also noted that the shoes that were found were different sizes. And in a second follow-up video , he takes a look at a shirt found in the area that was folded and wrapped with wire with several rocks placed inside – presumably so it would sink.

Comstock, who reports that he's lived in the area for 16 years following time with the United States Marine Corps, says he notified law enforcement, also reporting that they seemed disinterested at first but have since started to investigate the situation on their own.

It's easy to see why Comstock's discovery has drawn attention online – after all, the discovery is odd. Why would so many pairs of high heels be found in such a rugged and remote space?

Internet sleuths seem pretty stumped. Despite thousands of comments related to the find, very few mention any detail that would point to something other than a criminal act. Perhaps the most logical answer that doesn't involve something nefarious would be that someone dumped a bag of old shoes for some reason. Granted, if that's the case, why in a spot that's so remote? Why not the local dumpster?

Local law enforcement has yet to release a public statement on the matter. It could be something, it could be nothing – we'll have to wait and see.
