A 1980s California Modern Beach House Near Ventura Lists for $5.1 Million

As a young actress and model in the 1960s, Tracy “Babs” Susman appeared on The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Munsters . She would later go back to school for urban planning and worked in environmental planning, politics, and film production. Another part of her multifaceted legacy is the beachfront home she had built on the California coast in the mid-’80s. A Gustav Klimt Painting Could Fetch $80 Million at Auction For years, Susman’s sister and brother-in-law had a small rental cabin at Faria Beach, a small unincorporated coastal enclave in Ventura County. When the cabin became available for purchase, Susman bought it and commissioned modernist architect Carl Maston to design a house for her. Maston, an influential figure in the California Modernism movement, applied many of his signature elements to the Susman House: clean lines, natural materials, and easy connections between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. After it was completed in 1985, the home was captured on film by the renowned architectural photographer Julius Shulman . A double-sided brick fireplace separates the living room from the family room. Sterling Reed Susman died in 2023, and, according to tax records, the house passed to her longtime partner

38,000 on Central Coast expected to lose access to insurance in Medicaid cuts

Cuts made in the federal budget via last year’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” are starting to trickle down, and local healthcare providers are preparing to weather reductions in the number of clients who can access their services across the Central Coast. CenCal Health , the Central Coast’s Medi-Cal distributor, is expected to lose around 38,000 clients between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties this year. While the bulk of those reductions in insured people will be in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, around 9,000 San Luis Obispo clients are likely to lose their health insurance, CenCal Health CEO Marina Owen said. The bill included a $1 trillion reduction in federal funding for Medicaid, along with a new 80-hour-a-month work requirement and new limits on which immigrants are allowed to access Medicaid, and those changes are set to kick thousands of people off of their health insurance by the start of next year, she said. Owen said the federal government’s “reactionary choice” will start presenting in health outcomes a couple of years down the line; cancers undetected by early screenings will be found at later stages, preventable illnesses will increase with less consistent access to vaccinations, and already overburdened

King of the Hill in Campanil

Noteworthy new listings…. Built in 2022 on 1.71 acres, 3218 Campanil Drive ($29.995 million) has “White Lotus” baller energy in spades, from the king-of-the-hill view, to the luxurious elbow room (8,653 square feet and just four bedrooms), to the lower-level garage that looks like a Fletcher Jones dealership. And is that a trophy case by the elevator? More after I see the property in person today….

Hundreds lined up for the opening of Costco's Camarillo location

Costco's long-awaited Camarillo location opened its doors on Oct. 30 to customers waiting patiently in a line that wrapped around the new 162,000-square-foot warehouse. The store at 431 W. Ventura Blvd welcomed shoppers and Costco enthusiasts shortly before 8 a.m. during a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included local dignitaries and the Camarillo High School cheerleading team. Camarillo resident Jesse Valenz was among the first to enter the new store while sporting a T-shirt with a graphic of Costco's $1.50 hot dog with a caption reading "I got that dog in me." "I go to Costco everywhere I go," Valenz said, naming Japan and Mexico as just a few other Costco stores he has visited during his travels. Other enthusiasts and collectors, such as Seattle resident Israel Ruelas, frequently attend Costco store openings for some rare and discounted items. The rare items include liquor sold exclusively during the Camarillo opening and other spirits rarely found below the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price, Ruelas said. Camarillo projects Costco will generate $1.5 million in tax revenue a year, according to Mayor David Tennessen, who spoke about the warehouse store opening during the State of the City on Oct. 22. At first blush, it might appear the two candidates currently vying to fill the soon-to-be-vacant seat representing the fifth supervisorial district — Santa Maria City Councilmember Maribel Aguilera and Santa Maria school board member Ricardo Valencia are only $3,000 apart when it comes to the size of their campaign war chests. Both have raised more than $200,000; both report having a touch more than $100,000 left in their bank accounts. But looks are deceiving.
