These Irish dance students in Ventura step toward St. Patrick's Day
Students in a Ventura dance studio decorated with maps of Ireland, mirrors and championship trophies learn how to launch their bodies into the air and land without missing a beat. In addition to leaping twirls and the pounding staccato made possible by fiberglass shoe tips and heels, the kids in class at the Claddagh Dance Company on Main Street learn the importance of teamwork, discipline and dedication. They pick up a little grammar, too. “Don’t say 'yeah,' say 'yes,'" advised Maire O’Connell, the dance instructor from Galway, Ireland, who pronounces her name “Maw-rah” and has been running this dance school in Ventura for 40 years. She offers her young students wisdom about the ways of business, including how to respond to people who pass on tips or donations at performances because they have no cash. Genna Greaney, O’Connell’s 10-year-old granddaughter, has been dancing since she was 3. She has learned her lessons well. “We take Venmo, too,” she said, the words bringing a smile from grandma. Another lesson learned is appreciation of the importance of St. Patrick’s Day in the world of Irish dance. “It is the day. The day,” O’Connell said. “It gives all the children a chance to

Ventura preserve opens with new trail, wildflowers in bloom
Decades in the making, a new preserve opened recently in the hills overlooking Ventura and its coastline. The Ventura Land Trust purchased the property – that was once eyed for housing – several years ago and promised to preserve the 1,645 acres in perpetuity. Formerly called Mariano Rancho, the spot off Hall Canyon Road is now named the Ventura Hills Nature Preserve , stretching from the botanical gardens behind City Hall to the iconic Two Trees . Known for its steep climbs and sweeping views, the preserve had a sort of soft opening in February . On March 5, supporters gathered with city officials and the land trust's staff and volunteers at the main trailhead. A new trail winds uphill from the spot, through patches thick with yellow and white wildflowers . Ventura City Councilmember Doug Halter lauded the work to preserve local areas, from coastal areas to the hillsides, saying it improves quality of life and can help build community. "We are creating a phenomenal future," Halter told the crowd on Thursday. Miles of old access roads and trails already existed on the property that has 360-degree views above the city and out to the Channel Islands. Some stayed,
