    Man accused in shooting at Goddard Walmart charged

    WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The man accused of shooting a high school senior in the parking lot of the Goddard Walmart on May 11 made his first appearance in court on Wednesday.

    A judge read the charge against Ruben Contreras – attempted first-degree murder.

    The shooting happened around 4:57 p.m. on Saturday. Law enforcement responded to a call involving weapons at the Walmart at 18631 W. Kellogg Drive in Goddard. When law enforcement arrived, they found an 18-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was in a car in the parking lot.

    First responders initially triaged him with critical injuries, but the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office later said the victim’s injury was non-life-threatening.

    USD 261 confirmed the victim is a senior at Campus High School.

    Contreras remained at the scene of the shooting and was taken into custody by the SCSO. He was later booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.

    Contreras is next due in court on May 28. He is being held on a $300,000 bond.
