CDOT: Expect mountain traffic during spring snowstorms

GEORGETOWN, Colo. ( KDVR ) — High country snow caused several road closures on Interstate 70 Wednesday afternoon due to accidents near the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Many drivers exited at Georgetown, some even booking hotels to wait out any further delays.

Amy Brechbill told FOX31 she became concerned that the closures would affect her plans to drive from Nebraska to Moab for her daughter’s wedding.

“Just a little bit because I’ve got her wedding dress with me,” Brechbill said.

Georgetown Trust Deputy Director Trish Kinzele told FOX31 that the Gateway Visitor Center sees 500,000 visitors each year from around the world. The staff uses Colorado Department of Transportation cameras to assist those hoping to get back on the road as soon as possible.

“We use live camera feeds that also gives us information on closures and when they reopen,” said Kinzele.

The visitor center remained crowded with frustrated drivers hoping for good news indicating the highway would reopen soon.

A bus carrying the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners baseball team remained parked nearby.

“This is nuts, this is not OK. We’ve been stuck here for about an hour,” said player Zach Schuler.

The team is scheduled to play in Grand Junction on Wednesday evening. Schuler said he hopes they will arrive in time to properly prepare.

“Sitting in this bus for a while is going to be a little tough, but I know we’re a resilient group and I think we’re going to be alright,” Schuler said.
