Fast-food chain has closed two Johnson County restaurants. More remain open

Arby’s has shut down two of its restaurants in Johnson County, leaving a suburb with just one location remaining. Two Arby’s restaurants in Olathe have closed: 13790 S. Black Bob Road and 18615 W. 151st St. Signs direct customers to the remaining Olathe spot: 18060 W. 119th St. Arby’s has yanked the addresses of both closed locations from its website. The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. No national closings have been reported this month, but late last year, Arby’s quietly closed dozens of locations after sales dropped by more than 6%, according to reporting from TheStreet. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.

Johnson County's newest bakery, coffee shop offers international flavors

Abeer Jari is on the balls of her feet this early Monday afternoon, scurrying between the kitchen and the front register. She works through a line of three customers, one of whom said they decided to stop by after seeing a post on Instagram. She plops a meat-filled farmoza pastry on a plate and ships off a date bar. There aren’t many baked goods left at this point. Her inventory doesn’t make it until the end of the day. “So far, everything has sold out, and I’m happy for it,” she explained. Her new shop, Levant Bakery & Cafe, serves Middle Eastern cuisine from the Levant region, as well as items from beyond. It opened quietly over a week ago at 6518 Martway St. in Mission, but it plans a more official launch this weekend. Its walls are covered in antique frames and dark green paint. A large window is framed by checkered curtains, and a wall of mirrors covers one side of the bakery. The style is — some might say — grandma-chic. Amigos Locos brings fresh ‘Midwest Mexican’ dining

Michelle Rodriguez got her golden ticket and fulfilled her dream of starting a Mexican restaurant. Huston Hospitality owner Scott Huston brought her into the fold and let her work to bring a new dining experience to her hometown. "A golden ticket like Willy Wonka," Rodriguez said. "It was really surreal, just like seeing it and like seeing people eating the food and like seeing my logo on that really big wall. It was really surreal." Earlier in October, Amigos Locos , located at 4745 NW Hunters Ridge Circle , launched. Rodriguez said working with Huston on the project was amazing. "Creating a Mexican bar and grill has always been my dream," Rodriguez said. "I grew up here in Topeka. So, I just knew that there was a love for Midwest Mexican food; if that's a thing." Amigos Locos brings a Midwest Mexican menu As opposed to Tex-Mex, Rodriguez said the menu at Amigos Locos offers a more Midwestern style to the Americanized Mexican cuisine.
