Ohio trucking companies face crisis amid soaring diesel costs

There was one topic that dominated the Ohio Trucking Association's annual conference in September. Diesel fuel prices. National diesel prices hit a record-high average of $6.53 per gallon Sept. 21, and they remain near the historic peak. Diesel prices in Ohio average even higher, currently sitting at around $6.65 per gallon, almost $3 more expensive than the same time last year, when it was $3.66 a gallon. The Ohio Legislature has passed and Gov. Mike DeWine has signed a gas tax holiday bill that cuts the state tax on diesel fuel by 47 cents for 90 days officially beginning Sunday, Oct. 4. But the United States' war with Iran , which sparked rising fuel and diesel fuel costs beginning in February, shows no immediate signs of ending. Several Ohio trucking company leaders and industry experts interviewed by The Dispatch said their businesses – and the trucking industry as a whole – are facing an ongoing cash flow crisis brought on by soaring fuel costs. "It is very dire. We have seen trucking companies go out of business," said Thomas Balzer, president and CEO of the Ohio Trucking Association. TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Drivers in Ohio may need to wait a few more days before seeing lower gas prices, even as a state gas tax holiday is set to begin Sunday. Fairfield County departments and others deal with high fuel prices

LANCASTER − Anyone who has fueled up their vehicle recently knows fuel prices have skyrocketed since the United States went to war with Iran in February. Gas is around $4 per gallon or so and diesel fuel costs even more than that. The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office and county engineer's office must use a lot of fuel for their daily operations, but Sheriff Alex Lape said the fuel prices have not been too much of an issue so far. The sheriff's office allocated $250,000 for 2026 fuel costs. It had spent 56% of that amount as of July. County engineer Jeremiah Upp's office budgeted $180,000 for fuel this year and has spent $209,000. Lape said in April his office mandated deputies shut down their vehicles while doing duties outside the vehicle, like safety checks, interviews and the like. "That causes some grumbling, I guess, we'll say," Lape said. "But not a lot. The issue is the technology in the car. If you shut it completely off and then you start it back up, you have to log back into all the different systems on the computer in the car. So that sometimes has been an issue." For Upp, the prices
