Colon tops Climax-Scotts to get back to the Final Four in 8-player division football
CLIMAX - The Colon magic is back. The Magi are making another deep run in the football playoffs, taking another step with a win over Climax-Scotts. No. 3-ranked Colon defeated No. 9 Climax-Scotts 30-20 in this 8-player Division 1 regional final in high school football action at Climax-Scotts High School on Friday, Nov. 6. Colon (10-1) advanced to play at Montabella (10-1) in the 8-player Division 1 state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 14. These younger guys haven't seen this before in the playoffs. I haven't seen this. This team hasn't seen this in a long time. Albion woman charged in December 2024 fatal crash
COLDWATER, MI — The Oct. 27 bomb threat that closed the Branch County Courthouse postponed Trudy Marie Johnson’s preliminary examination until December. Johnson, 52, faces charges of operating with a suspended, revoked, or denied license causing death. According to the complaint, Johnson allegedly caused a December 2024 head-on crash that later claimed the life of 87-year-old Lewis Marvin of Union City. Assistant Prosecutor Vaughn K. Stecker authorized the warrant on July 9, a year and a half after the crash. Court records show Johnson turned herself in on July 22 and was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. Her Oct. 27 court hearing was delayed by the bomb threat, first to Nov. 3 and now to December. The 15-year felony charge stems from a Dec. 20, 2024, head-on crash on M-60 near Stanton Road in Sherwood Township. The Branch County Sheriff's Department reported that Johnson, then 50 and living in Battle Creek, was driving east shortly before 6 a.m. when her vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a westbound vehicle driven by Marvin, with Diane Marvin as a passenger. KALAMAZOO — Earlier this year, customers at a Kalamazoo shopping center were accosted by gangs of children selling candy. The youths wouldn’t wait for shoppers to get out of their vehicles and then followed them into stores, the patrons said. They cursed at people who turned them down. As brazen as the bullying was how they obtained the confections. They stole it from stores on the other side of the street, police said. Authorities were swarmed with calls from both sides of M-43. One group of shops complained about the thefts and the other about the harassment of customers. But law enforcement could do little. Unless they could prove the sweets were stolen, it wasn’t illegal for the juveniles to sell them. The dozen kids, who were as young as 8, were dubbed the Candy Boys. UNION CITY — For the first time in 24 years, the Jonesville Comets are district football champions. Jonesville continued its historic postseason run Friday, Nov. 6, defeating Union City 52-30 to capture a MHSAA Division 7 district championship, the program’s first since 2002.
