Burnett, Phillips combine to no-hit Floyd
Lance Burnett and Ben Phillips combined for a no-hitter Friday as Carroll County’s baseball team won a Three Rivers District contest 9-2 at Floyd County. Burnett carried the bulk of the workload for Carroll County (11-3, 5-3 Three Rivers District), delivering 103 pitches over six innings. The Cavalier senior struck out 10, walked four, and allowed one run in six hitless innings. Phillips came on in relief to start the seventh inning. Phillips walked three and hit a batter, but did not allow a hit to complete the combined no-no.
DeHaven hired as Carroll's new AD
Now in his ninth season as Carroll County High School’s head baseball coach, Kevin DeHaven will soon have his hand in all Cavalier sports. A 1993 graduate of CCHS and a member of the Carroll County High School Sports Hall of Fame, DeHaven has been hired as Carroll County’s new athletic director/assistant principal. Nathanael Dalton won two events May 4 as Carroll County’s boys’ track team won the VA Relays at Virginia High School in Bristol, Va. Senior Jabin Talley’s complete rewrite of the Carroll County High School tennis record book continued Thursday with the 60th and 61st varsity wins of his career. Those victories came Thursday as Talley led the Cavaliers to an 8-1 victory over Galax in Hillsville. Talley defeated his Maroon Tide opponent 8-0 at No. 1 singles for his 60th varsity win.
