St. Joseph steeple receiving repairs

FREMONT - If you see a large crane in the downtown, it is because the steeple of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St., is receiving much-needed repair. Windstorms and age have led to missing tiles and failing ridge capping.

Architectural metal detail has begun to rust, and the old wooden vents are in need of painting. Work began in late April and over the course of four months, these repairs will slowly take shape, according to a press release.

Detroit Steeplejack has been hired to take on the task. The crane represents only the first week of the project. The rest of the restoration will be completed using ropes and hoists.

Owner Bryan Dulsky has been in the construction business for 32 years. Around 10 years ago he decided to handle steeple restoration exclusively. There are plenty of steeples back in Detroit. But he still travels to other cities when they are in need of repair.

Saint Joseph's steeple is the tallest in Fremont. The top of its cross measures an impressive 239 feet from the ground. It was recently surveyed by an engineer, who determined its inner structure is sound. It has an imposing silhouette on the skyline as you drive into town.
