Dover's 'can opener' Broadway bridge, known for stuck trucks, gets its own T-shirt
DOVER — The Broadway railroad bridge is so notorious for trucks getting stuck underneath, it has been called "the can opener" by some locals and is now featured on a T-shirt. There have been 10 truck strikes at the bridge so far in 2026, according to Dover police Capt. Mark Nadeau. There were six bridge strikes in 2025, seven in 2024 and nine in 2023. Foster's has reported for many years on strikes at the bridge, which was built in 1901. "It's crazy," said Joe Dirusso, who works at Papa Jay's Pizzeria, located very close to the steel truss bridge with a 9-foot, 6-inch clearance. "When it hits the bridge, it kind of sounds like the train ... like a bang of like cargo stopping. It kind of shakes the building. ... We go outside and then we see something hit the bridge." Dirusso said it's usually U-Hauls that hit the bridge, often operated by drivers unaware of the height of the truck they rented. Dirusso said the pizzeria staff hear trucks backing up all day because many truck drivers turn around to avoid getting stuck. Nadeau said this year’s bridge strikes include three U-Haul box trucks, one U.S. Postal

Step inside Exeter’s art scene: Fall tour brings 14 studios and galleries to life
EXETER — Whether you’re looking for a weekend outing or already easing into the holiday season, Exeter’s annual Fall Art Tour offers a chance to meet local artists and see what’s new in town. The self‑guided tour runs Nov. 7–8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with 14 stops ranging from Water Street galleries to tucked‑away home studios opening their doors for the event. Visitors can explore fine art, craft, studio collectives and individual workspaces, all within a three‑mile radius and at their own pace. Lauren Hutton, owner of Avery Art in downtown Exeter and a member of this year’s organizing group, said the tour serves several purposes: it gives visitors a chance to explore local art in public storefronts while also offering a rare look inside the home studios where much of that work is created. She said it’s also a way for artists to connect with the community and for residents to “see how vibrant the art community is in Exeter.” Hutton said she has participated in the art tour for three years and has been excited to see it grow each year. This year, she was involved in helping Rose Bryant, the founder of Art Up Front

Dover finds new site for temporary warming center, with cots
DOVER — City officials announced the Veterans Building at 156 Back River Road will be used as a temporary emergency cold-weather warming center starting Nov. 15, instead of the McConnell Center cafeteria , and it will have cots for sleeping. The McConnell Center had been previously announced as the temporary site because of construction delays for the new Strafford County warming center , which is being built on County Farm Road. The new center won't be ready for the start of the 2026-27 season, which runs mid-November to mid-April. Dover officials previously said the McConnell Center cafeteria would not have offered beds or cots, only chairs, and members of the homeless population using that site would have to leave by 7 a.m. due to other operations in the building, which includes city and school offices and a daycare. The city-owned Veterans Building has room for cots, city officials announced. Strafford County’s contracted warming center operator, East Coast Evolution Leadership, will run the center at this location and the new center, when it opens. Officials stated the warming center is opened based on weather, as determined by the emergency management directors of Dover, Rochester and Somersworth, when extreme or severe weather
