On San Francisco’s Waterfront, This Buffet Has California Seafood Lovers Piling Up Garlicky Crab Legs

Some people come to San Francisco for the cable cars and the bridge photos. Others come with one goal in mind, and it involves a plate stacked high with crab legs. Near the busy piers of Fisherman’s Wharf, there is a second-floor dining room where the crab keeps coming and nobody counts your trips back to the line. The menu leans Cajun, the setting looks out over the bay, and the price is one flat fee.

This California Seafood Buffet Lets You Pile Up Garlicky Crab Legs Overlooking the Bay

I almost walked right past the narrow doorway and the little elevator, thinking it was just another tourist stop. Then I stepped into a second-floor room with windows facing the water and the smell of garlic and Cajun spice hit me all at once. This California buffet turned a quick...

The Mission Welcomes an Arab and Japanese Crossover Cocktail Bar in November

Sake and arak, yuzu kosho and damask rose — these ingredients are the backbone of the Yabani bar menu. Yabani, a new cocktail bar mixing Arabian and Japanese flavors, is settling into the former Nihon Whiskey Lounge space in the Mission. Opening on Friday, November 6, it comes from the owner behind amaro-focused Bar 821, Tsunami Sushi, and the former tenant, Nihon. The idea, says beverage director Mohammed Zagha, is to bring an Arab bar to San Francisco, naming it Yabani after the Arabic word for Japanese. “We were playing with the idea because [owner Khaled Dajani] is Palestinian, I’m half-Jordanian,” Zagha says. “We both lived in West Asia, and we’re thinking about all the different flavors ... At the same time, we’re just thinking about how we still want to keep Nihon’s soul in it a little bit.”

Diablo Dish: Exciting New East Bay Brunch Spots

Got Benedict? You Will Soon. The local dining scene is buzzing with exciting new brunch concepts launching across the East Bay. First up is Kat’s Kitchen, which replaced beloved Berkeley brunch destination Rick & Ann’s at the base of the Claremont Hotel and opened softly last week. The family-run eatery, led by Victor Maravilla, brought in chef Michael Fornasero, who has experience from revered Bay Area restaurants Foreign Cinema, A16, and The Boonville Hotel. At Kat’s, Fornasero has assembled a “thoughtful, farm-fresh menu” that reimagines neighborhood favorites while “challenging preconceived notions of what breakfast, brunch and lunch can be.” The breakfast menu includes avocado and trout toasts; a “Sweety” section with pancakes, Dutch baby, and classic and Mexican-spiced Belgian waffles; and savory selections ranging from a breakfast sando and Benedict to shakshuka and mole chilaquiles. Lunch offers starters including lentil soup and mussels, salads, and several sandwiches. Kats also makes its own baked goods and plans to start evening wine bar service.

Passing the knife at Oakland’s Delage: New chef, familiar spirit

Love it or hate it, when a chef decides to step away from their restaurant, change is inevitable. A new chef at the helm can mean a few things: a new menu, a new look, or maybe an entirely new restaurant in everything but the name. But for chef Kyle Itani, Delage’s next chapter is not about starting over, but about building on the restaurant’s Michelin-level omakase while adding a few touches of his own.

The best things Eater SF’s editor ate in October

October was filled with a not-quite-caprese salad, cold soba, and a new favorite sushi bite. It can be tough to decide where to dine out in a metropolitan area like the Bay that’s filled to the brim with excellent eats. Dining Reports are just one way to get the word out on the restaurants I’m eating at, but the Best Dishes column is where I break down the singular dishes that stood out, were maybe inadvertently left out of a report, or just haven’t (yet) found their way into coverage — until now. This month’s selections feature a not-caprese salad, cold soba, and a surprising sushi bite in Oakland.
