Boy starts Halfway to the Holidays toy drive
A 10-year-old Sparta resident has launched a toy drive to bring holiday cheer to local children six months early. The “Halfway to the Holidays Toy Drive,” organized by Brendan Kierans, will collect donations of new unwrapped toys through June 25 at Lakeside Cafe, 8 White Deer Plaza, and Stop & Shop, 5 Town Center Drive, both in Sparta, and at Hayek’s Market, 1 Mill St., Newton.

Sparta Township Raises Flag for Police Appreciation Week 2024
SPARTA, NJ – The flag honoring Police Appreciation Week is flying on the flagpoles in front of Sparta’s town hall. All of the flags including the American flag, New Jersey state flag and POW MIA flags are lowered to half staff this week “to honor all law enforcement officers, federal, state and local, who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty” according to the New Jersey Department of State. Gold Star Memorial Marker dedication Saturday
A Gold Star Memorial Marker dedication ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 75 N. Church Road, Sparta. SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – The Sussex County Board of Elections accepted the resignation of chair Daniel Perez. According to Sussex County Democratic Committee Executive Director James Santonastaso Perez resigned his position on May 11, citing “family and business obligations” as the reason for the “amicable” departure. Santonastaso said on that same day the SCDC submitted a candidate for the vacated seat to the governor’s office for consideration.
