Halsted Middle School Student Receives 'Positive Ticket'
NEWTON, NJ—A Halsted Middle School student received a “Positive Ticket” from the Newton Police Department, the first one for April. According to Assistant Principal, Angela Dunbar, Tyler Marion received the positive ticket from School Resource Officer Justin Bellis. Each ticket has been printed and donated by Minisink Press and comes with what is called a “posi token” that can be redeemed for an item at one of three participating local businesses: One free tall hot or iced coffee or iced tea from Starbucks A slice of pizza from Dominick’s A small fruit smoothie from The Nutrition Store. “We're incredibly proud to witness the positivity these students bring to our community and we're honored to recognize their efforts. A house in Sparta that sold for $1.2 million tops the list of the most expensive residential real estate sales in Sussex County in the past week. In total, 28 residential real estate sales were recorded in the county during the past week, with an average price of $414,929. The average price per square foot ended up at $245.

Sparta's Animal Control Officer Recognized for 23 Year Service to Community
SPARTA, NJ – The township’s animal control officer, Don Critchlaw was recognized at the township council meeting on Tuesday during Police Chief Jeff McCarrick’s report in honor of National Animal Control Officers Week. Critchlaw said a homeowner “opened his barbecue and got a surprise,” a three-foot alligator. Critchlaw said they surmised it had gotten out of a residence where it was being kept. He said he put the alligator in a cat carrier and had to bring it home for the night because it was Sunday. Newton eyes $3M in projects, including water-sewer upgrades, Memory Park hockey rink
NEWTON — The town council considered more than $3 million in public works projects in its latest meeting, including a series of water and sewer upgrades, a new boardwalk and the rehabilitation of the outdoor hockey rink next to Memory Park. The council on Monday night scheduled a half-dozen public hearings to be held at their May 13 session to vote on the projects, which also include $250,000 in road-repaving work around Newton. That followed a decision Monday to reject a bid received for the hockey facility and another vote to authorize the police department hire Brian Zakrzewski as a new police officer.
