Man killed by Amtrak train after driving onto tracks in Spotsylvania, police investigating

SPOTSYLAVNIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A man is dead after police said he was struck by an Amtrak train while driving over train tracks in Spotsylvania County Thursday afternoon.

According to Virginia State Police, 55-year-old Aaron L. Krebs, of Fredericksburg, was driving eastbound on Mine Road at around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18. When he got to a railroad crossing at the intersection of Mine Road and Benchmark Road, the crossing arms were down due to an approaching Amtrak train.

Police said Krebs disregarded the crossing arms and drove around them, onto the railroad tracks. While Krebs’ car was on the railroad tracks, it was struck by the Amtrak train, which was heading south.

Krebs was pronounced dead at the scene, police said he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported on the Amtrak train, which stayed at the scene after the crash.

This incident is still under investigation by state police.
