Utica engineers under directive to remove controversial traffic island
UTICA — South Utica’s traffic island has come back into the spotlight almost two months after a vote to dismantle it was vetoed by the mayor. The traffic island at the intersection of Eastwood Avenue and Dunham Road in Utica has become a contentious and controversial issue for councilors and constituents alike. Eastwood Avenue and Dunham Road previously had an expansive intersection that was considered a risk for accidents to occur.

Chenango Canal built, connects waterways: This week in Mohawk Valley history
Construction begins on the Chenango Canal that will connect the Erie Canal in Utica to the Susquehanna River in Binghamton. It will be 97 miles long and 20 of those miles will be in Oneida County, passing through Utica and the towns of New Hartford, Kirkland, Marshall and Augusta. It will have 116 locks. John B. Jervis, of Rome, will be chief engineer. The canal was completed in 1836 for $2.7 million. It lasted for about 30 years, primarily carrying Pennsylvania coal to communities to the north.)
Boilermaker beer bill passes Assembly
ALBANY — Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-C, Marcy, has announced the Assembly’s passage of her bill to allow beer to be served at the Boilermaker post-race party. Every year, community members gather at the F.X. Matt Brewery to celebrate the Boilermaker, Utica’s largest event. Part of the celebration includes free beer for all attendees over the age of 21.
