FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The Victim Assistance Department within the Fort Wayne PD will be honoring those who have been lost to violent crime with a candlelight vigil this evening.

While the vigil is hosted annually, the theme changes every year. The theme this year is “How would you help? Options, services, and hope for crime survivors.”

“It’s really a call to action. It asks the community how you can rally around anyone who has been a victim, what can you do to support them, and how can you help them find services, support, and hope.” says Kristy Lindeman, Director of the Victim Assistance Department.

The vigil will honor those who have been lost recently and those who have been lost long ago.

“We’re letting them know that while they’ve lost loved ones, and maybe their case is closed, we haven’t forgotten that those people have been lost. We want to remember them. We want them to have a legacy moving forward.” says Lindeman.

The Peggy Murphy Grief Center and Erin’s House for Grieving Children will be available at the vigil to provide help and information to those in need.

Additionally, all victim advocates within the department will be present and ready to speak with any victims or surviving family members.

The vigil will take place at the Public Safety Academy on April 22 at 5:30.
