The Stanley County Lady Buffaloes will open up the season tonight at home against the Chamberlain Cubs with the Lady Buffs again looking to improve on its win total. This is the third year for Keely Bracelin, the head coach for the Lady Buffs and the team doubled its win total from year one to year two. Stanley County finished last season at 6-15 falling to Dupree in the first round of the Region 6A tournament. However, Stanley County loses just two players from last year’s team, Kori Gabriel and Alejandra Juarez both graduated but the team returns Mattie Duffy, Cadence Hand and Rachel Rungee for their senior year.

PIERRE. (KCCR) — The Hughes County Commission is starting it’s December with a meeting tonight. Commissioners will continue discussions on a snow policy for county employees. In new business, the Commission will discuss county employee insurance with Risty Benefits, have an update on the Veterans Service Officer position and will consider the 2024 calendar. Also on the agenda for the Hughes County Commission is volunteers for Pierre Rural Fire, the Snake Butte Antenna and personnel new hires for the Highway Department, Sheriff’s Office, Jail and Emergency Management. The meeting will end with reports from the Auditor, County Manger and Commission Liaisons. The Hughes County Commission meets tonight at 5:30 pm. The poorest city in South Dakota is Fort Thompson, which is located along the Missouri River in Crow Creek Sioux Reservation. According to the latest five-year American Community Survey (ACS) data, the median household income in Fort Thompson is just $24,125, which is 62.3% less than the statewide median household income of $63,920. Additionally, the poverty rate in Fort Thompson is 47.4%, which is significantly higher than the statewide poverty rate of 12.5%.

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Lower Brule man has been sentenced in federal court for voluntary manslaughter. A federal jury in July found 32 year-old Joseph Thompson guilty of one count of voluntary manslaughter at the end of a three day trial in Pierre. U-S Attorney Alison Ramsdell says Thompson was at a home in Lower Brule in March of this year when he heard a disturbance outside. That’s when Thompson exited the structure, walked around the home and located a man. Thompson took out a knife and stabbed the man five times, including once in the heart. The victim gave no indication at the time of having a weapon. Thompson was sentenced to serve 10 years and eight months in federal prison and three years of probation upon his release. In addition to the prison time and probation, Thompson was ordered to pay the family of the victim three-thousand 350-dollars and 100-dollars to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
