A date change, a mid-game venue change, and a handful of broken records all made for a story that sounded like it was "written by a fifth grader," according to Quincy (IL) head football coach Rick Little. CTU president talks strike, says state owes $6 billion

(The Center Square) – Chicago Teachers Union leaders say they will keep pushing for more state funding of public education after Tuesday’s school board elections in Chicago, and CTU members will strike if they need to. With a few precincts still not reported on Wednesday, CTU-backed candidates won at least nine of 21 Chicago Board of Education seats but fell short of gaining a majority. Jessica Biggs won the election for school board president over CTU-backed candidate Hilario Dominguez, who told supporters it was one moment in a longer fight. “We ain’t going nowhere. This campaign was something much bigger than one seat on a school board,” Dominguez said. Biggs thanked voters in a social media post. “So grateful for this incredible support and ready to move Chicago Public Schools forward. The work starts now!” Biggs posted. Water bottle strikes high school soccer official after upset win, sparking IHSA probe

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced on Tuesday, Nov. 3, that it is investigating "disturbing actions" directed toward an official on Friday, Oct. 30. The incident followed an IHSA Boys Soccer State Series contest at Glenbard South High School (Glen Ellyn, IL). According to the Daily Herald , official Hanah Shehaiber was assaulted while leaving the field after she officiated a boys soccer Class 2A sectional final between No. 7 Glenbard South and No. 1 Juarez (Chicago, IL). Glenbard South pulled off a 3-1 upset win. Social media video shows that as officials were escorted off the field, a Juarez supporter threw a full bottle of water at them. The water bottle struck Shehaiber in the back and caused her injury. "The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) vehemently condemns disrespectful behavior toward game officials and believes it is imperative that all school administrators, coaches, and fellow fans take an active role in addressing and preventing abusive behavior they witness at any age or level," the statement from the IHSA read. "The IHSA is currently investigating disturbing actions that were directed toward game officials following an IHSA Boys Soccer State Series contest at Glenbard South High School on October 30.

UIC sets enrollment record as U.S. college confidence falls

As doubts about the value of higher education grow nationally, the University of Illinois Chicago is doubling down on affordability and student support and reports record enrollment for the second consecutive year. The university enrolled more than 37,000 students this fall, the highest enrollment in its history. Undergraduate numbers among Illinois residents increased nearly 7%. Marie Lynn Miranda, chancellor of the university, said it reflects a commitment to making college accessible while helping students graduate and secure good jobs. One program covers tuition and mandatory fees for eligible students from families earning $75,000 or less. More than half of this fall’s incoming freshmen qualified. “When you're a university that takes access, affordability, accountability very seriously, the things that make people hesitate about higher education feel less overwhelming for a young person and their family,” Miranda explained. Transfer students are also contributing to UIC’s growth, with more than 2,600 enrolling this fall. The university reports strong interest in nursing, business, STEM and online programs, while working to create pathways for students from community colleges. Nationally, a recent Gallup poll revealed just 31% of Americans consider a college education very important, a record low. Miranda noted the university's racial and socioeconomic diversity

ROCKTON — Like they say, you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your enemies and that sure applies to the football playoffs. Hononegah (9-1) just happened to draw the 6A defending state champion Fenwick Friars (7-3) for their second-round opponent. Kickoff at Kelsey Field on Saturday is at 1 p.m. “They’re a well-coached team and they are fundamentally sound in every facet of the game,” Hononegah head coach Brian Zimmerman said. “They play in a really tough, private Catholic school league. Their three losses all come to top-10 ranked teams.” So how do the Indians hand them their fourth defeat? “We are going to have to play one of our best games, obviously,” Zimmerman said. “We’re going to have to really limit our mistakes. We’re going to have to be methodical moving the ball. Every possession, we’re going to have to keep moving the sticks. We can’t turn the ball over like we did in the first half against Willowbrook.” The Indians led only 6-3 at halftime against the Warriors last Friday, but ended up winning 32-3 as whatever offensive missteps they experienced in the first half were ironed out during the break. District 65 will not cut School Age Child Care

Evanston/Skokie School District 65 will not cut the School Age Child Care (SACC) program as part of its sweeping budget cuts.
