HANNIBAL, Mo. — Bike riders of all ages and ability levels are invited to participate in a Memorial Day recreational bike ride organized by the Quincy Bicycle Club. This ride will offer distances of 21, 32 or 39 miles with organized rest stops. Missouri’s One-Of-A-Kind Restaurants Offer Delicious Cuisine and a Dose of History
In the small town of Palmyra, Missouri, northwest of Hannibal (the hometown of Mark Twain), a historical property has taken on new life as Cole’s Hearth Room. Now an elevated American restaurant, the Hearth Room was a farmstead whose original barns and silo were built in 1846. During the Civil War, gurneys filled the halls of the main building so the home could function as a hospital. When the farm’s owners lost the home during the Great Depression, the adjacent Greenwood Cemetery developed it into a caretaker’s house. In 2006, Chef Coltin Cole and his wife, Deidra, purchased and began renovating the property.

Java Jive is a cafe, deli and small gift shop wrapped into one convenient operation on one of the historic streets of downtown Hannibal. The business opened in 2000, following a pottery shop and small cafe that had been in place since 1993. After working with her family’s company for many years, Katy Welch became the second-generation owner and operator of the space in 2009.

MACON, Mo. — Four people died in a three-vehicle crash on Friday morning on U.S. 36 near Macon. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2018 Toyota Camry driven by Jean Jones, 85, of Macon was southbound and failed to yield, striking a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox that was eastbound on U.S. 36 and was driven by Julie Alspaugh, 56, of Hannibal. Alspaugh lost control of the Equinox, which traveled into the path of a 2016 Freightliner that was westbound on U.S. 36 and driven by Eugene A. Niethe III of Wood River, Ill.
