FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The United States Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers will be participating in the 32nd Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this weekend.

On Saturday, May 11, you can leave non-perishable food items at your mailbox and letter carriers will take it to local food pantries nationwide.

Organizers say the timing of the drive is crucial because many pantries are depleted by springtime entering the summer on low supplies.

Why the USPS is urging homeowners to fix their mailboxes

“All the food collected locally stays local. I think this year we’re going to give to the 7hills Homeless Shelter so that food will stay local,” Carla Biggerstaff, acting postmaster at USPS Fayetteville, said.

USPS said the food drive has collected nearly two billion pounds of food over its 30-plus-year history.
