Soda-flavored milk. Cotton candy milk. Both come in glass bottles, and many of those bottles go back to the farm to be washed and filled again. I love that this Missouri dairy treats its returnable milk bottles like boomerangs. You pay a deposit, bring the bottle back, and it heads right into the wash line.

The Kansas City area was once home to multiple tribes of American Indians, and Native American Heritage Month (Nov. 1-30) will offer ample opportunities to honor that history. The Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site on the grounds of a 19th-century manual training school for Native American children is the area’s go-to venue for year-round programs and exhibitions. It also is the temporary site for the traveling exhibition “Trespassers Beware!: Fort Conley and Wyandot Women Warriors.” It’s important to note that for several years the Shawnee Indian Mission site has been in the news: first with allegations that Indigenous children who attended the school may have been buried on the grounds, and later, the ownership of the site has been disputed among Native American tribes, including the Shawnee and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. The site and its ownership have been at the center of Kansas Legislation . Also during Native American Heritage Month is a book talk at the Kansas City Public Library-Plaza Branch, and the Indigenous Art Market in Shawnee. If you’re up for a day trip, Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center near Miami might be worth the 90-mile drive. It will be open only on weekends Nov.

The Landmark has made it clear that its policy is to publish letters to the editor as submitted, regardless of whether the claims are true or the information can be independently verified. I understand the difficult position that puts the newspaper in. The staff doesn’t have time to fact-check every letter, and if they pick and choose which letters to publish, they risk accusations of favoritism. I get it.

A Clay County judge has dismissed the case filed by two candidates against the current county collector – for now. In September, Republican presiding commissioner candidate Jason Maki and Republican collector candidate Jim Bosch filed a petition against current Platte County Collector Sheila Palmer, also a Republican. It asked the court to compel Palmer to implement the voter-approved Homestead Tax Credit on this year's tax bills. Bosch was dismissed from the petition on Oct. 21.
Late October has brought a perfect storm to Missouri. As civil rights groups rally voters against high-stakes ballot measures and organizers fight to protect families from subzero utility cutoffs, a landmark court ruling has struck a blow against prison sentence inflation. Meanwhile, a new federal and state crackdown on SNAP benefits is raising fears of administrative “food stamp raids” in vulnerable neighborhoods. From Kansas City to St. Louis, Missouri is at a breaking point, and local communities are doing everything they can to hold the line.
