Somerset SAR set to dedicate new Revolutionary War Memorial Nov. 11

As Somerset County is preparing to honor veterans on Nov. 11, a new memorial to celebrate the country's first veterans will be unveiled. The Great Glades Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will officially dedicate the county’s newest monument to honor and acknowledge the service of Somerset County’s Revolutionary War veterans. The formal dedication ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at the monument on the Courthouse Plaza. Lynn Schrock and William Lehman, both of Somerset, have been working, researching and trying to verify the service of all the veterans buried in the county. There were more who once lived here, but they limited the list to those buried in Somerset County. They also have a listing of the patriots who didn't serve in the military but supported the cause in other ways. Lehman, president of the Great Glades Chapter and District 8 deputy for the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, said he lives near the courthouse. He and his wife take walks and one day she mentioned to him that there is no monument for Revolutionary War soldiers at the courthouse. "She said we should do something about it," Lehman said.
