College sports: Five Verona student-athletes sign National Letters of Intent
Five student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent on Jan. 16 to continue athletic careers at the collegiate level. The five athletes who signed are Nathan Kirwan, who will play volleyball at Aurora University; Harriet Salas, who will play softball at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville; Bryson Kundinger, who will wrestle at UW-Eau Claire. Two baseball players – Jack DeTienne and Owen Davis also signed. DeTienne signed to play baseball at Xavier University and Davis signed to play baseball at Edgewood College.

Brodhead junior pitcher Ava Risum has been named a MaxPreps/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week for games played April 22-28. Junior Mallorie Kreuser pitched two gems and had a game-winning hit in two games on Saturday, May 11, at LeGrange Elementary School in Tomah. Kreuser had an RBI single to propel Verona by Holmen 3-2 on Saturday. She also tossed 11 ⅓ innings and struck out 16 in a nail-biting 4-3 loss to Tomah in 12 innings.

Few athletes were as busy as Oregon junior Jacob Yoerger juggling three events at the start of the Badger Large Conference meet on Tuesday, May 14, at Panther Stadium. After running the preliminaries of the 110-meter high hurdles, Yoerger won a championship in the pole vault after clearing a conference record 14 feet, 1 inch. The Oregon boys track and field team had three top-five finishers in the pole vault to finish fourth at the Tom Mueller Invitational on Friday, May 10, at Oregon High School.
