Cardinals topple state-ranked Pirates
The Marshall baseball program has been forged from fire in the early portion of the 2024 season. Entering the week of April 22, the Cardinals had already lost to three teams ranked in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (WBCA) top-20: New Glarus (No. 10, Division 3), Columbus (No. 19, Division 2), and Deerfield (No. 19, Division 3). Marshall hosted a fourth ranked team on Tuesday, April 23, but with much higher stakes. Waterloo entered the matchup as more than just the Cardinals' top rival, but...
Checking in on the Marshall and Waterloo track teams
High school track & field is supposed to follow a certain rhythm. Typically, at least in the Capitol Conference, teams will compete in early-week quads before splitting off to challenge themselves at larger invitationals later in the week. A lot of rain on Tuesday, April 16 threw a wrench into these plans, though, for Marshall and Waterloo. Waterloo’s early week warm-up was set to be a quad at Belleville High School against Columbus, Lodi, and Sugar River. Marshall was set to take on a triangular...
Marshall baseball splits series with Belleville
The Marshall baseball program was itching to get a second Capitol — South conference game under its belt. The Cardinals were left with a bitter taste in their mouths following the first, a 14-1 home loss to New Glarus to open the new season. The three games that followed were all against non-conference opponents. Marshall had a pair of chances to right this rough start by playing its season series against Belleville in successive days. The Cardinals hosted the Wildcats on Thursday, April 18 and...

Waterloo softball hosts weekend tournament
Saturday, April 20 was a good day to spend at Waterloo Fireman’s Park. Both the Waterloo baseball and softball teams hosted tournaments, inviting talented squads from the area to compete. The softball team brought in non-conference opponents Deerfield, Mineral Point, and Lomira. It was a day of mixed results against some tough competition. The day got off to a strong start for Waterloo with a 10-0 win over Deerfield, called due to mercy rule after five innings. The Pirates were in for a pair of...
Waterloo baseball adds signature win over Cambridge
The success of the Waterloo baseball program early in this 2024 season has been no secret. The Pirates got off to a red-hot 7-0 start, but this stretch needed a real “prove it” victory. The opportunity for this came with a matchup against Cambridge on Thursday, April 18 at Waterloo Fireman’s Park. The Blue Jays finished in a three-way tie for the Capitol — South conference title last season. This, along with plenty of returning talent, earned them the No. 4 spot in Division 3...
The Last Hunt: Tom's Guns hosts final Turkey Hunt in Marshall
In the more populated areas of the country, people come together over a wide variety of things. Movies, clubs, bars, parties, politics, protest, and things of the like bring people out in droves. But in the countryside, where life is slower and quieter, people come together in different ways, including the age old practice of hunting. All year round, all around the country, families and friends stalk silently out into the wilderness together in the hopes of bringing home both food and trophies. ...

Marshall softball enjoys four-game winning streak
The 2024 season didn’t start exactly how the Marshall softball team had hoped. The Cardinals, reigning champions of the Capitol — South conference with a WIAA regional to their name the season prior, started the year ranked No. 9 in Division 3 of the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (WFSCA) coaches poll. Back-to-back losses to Waterloo and Poynette bumped them from the list in the second iteration of the poll. The early portion of this week offered an opportunity for Marshall to bounce back. The...

Waterloo track & field hosts home conference tri
The fickle Wisconsin springtime weather allowed for plenty of competition last week. While the weather wasn’t exactly sunny and 75 degrees, Waterloo’s track & field program was able to open its season with a home Capitol Conference traingular, inviting Marshall and Cambridge, on Tuesday, April 9. While visiting Marshall had an impressive meet, winning 24 of the varsity events, there were still some positive results for host Waterloo to be proud of, as well. ...

Marshall track & field performs well in first week of action
The Marshall track & field program has hit the ground running in 2024, pun intended. The Cardinals have wasted no time as establishing themselves as a threat in the area. They kicked off the season by lighting up a Capitol Conference triangular at Waterloo High School on Tuesday, April 9 before heading to Markesan High School on Thursday, April 11 for an invitational. There, the boys took first place with a team score of 192 while the girls finished runner-up with a score of 127. ...
Pirates keep on winning
The Waterloo baseball program is one of the area’s hottest teams. The Pirates experienced the woes of tight losses and bad injury luck in 2023. With largely the same roster back for this spring, the tides have turned in an impressive way. When we last checked in on Waterloo, the Pirates were off to an inspiring 3-0 record. That number has now more than doubled to 7-0 with a trio of home wins before collecting another on the road. They knocked off Poynette 12-6 on...
Dominant three-game stretch for Waterloo softball
The Waterloo softball team cleared a massive hurdle early in the 2024 season. The Pirates avenged a pair of losses to rival Marshall from the season prior, handing them a 2-1 walk-off loss on Monday, April 8. Following the pride of victory came a humbling defeat. The day following, the Pirates made the trip to face Columbus on Tuesday, April 9 and left with a 12-6 loss. Instead of allowing this non-conference stumble derail progress, Waterloo turned on the jets. The Pirates proceeded to launch...

In Waterloo, grant program aimed at downtown beautification
Time waits for no one and nothing, as we are all aware. It waits for no one and slowly but surely entropy comes along and wears things down, and so it goes. Fortunately, in Waterloo, when it comes to objects and places where entropy can be restored, ambitious and like-minded individuals actively work to keep things looking fresh. The Waterloo Community Development Authority is on the job and doing what...
