Athens roper lands top spot at Fort Worth rodeo
FORT WORTH, Texas (KLTV) - A cowboy from Athens won first place in his event at a Fort Worth rodeo. Wenceslao “Lightning” Aguilera, 29, placed first in round one of team roping at the Stockyards Pro Rodeo on Thursday. Aguilera completed the round with a time of 4.0 seconds, earning a $1,073 payday. He is currently ranked #34 in the PRCA standings for team roping.
Cedar Creek Roller Derby League hosts first bout at Mabank Pavilion
Cedar Creek Roller Derby League holds its first bout at the Mabank Pavilion Nov. 11. The family-friendly event will host another bout (game) each quarter. The event brings in athletes from the East Texas area. The games are filled with action and good sportsmanship as spectators watch for the winning points.
Athens ISD announces 2023 Athletic Hall of Fame Class
Athens has produced some truly outstanding athletes over the years, three of whom will be inducted into the Athens ISD Athletic Hall of Fame in December. “I love Athens. It’s where I grew up,” said AHS class of 1999 honoree and NFL veteran Terrence McGee. “Going home … that nostalgia hits me. The air seems different.”
Boys Basketball: Davis sparks Troup by Alba-Golden
TROUP — Trae Davis dropped in 17 points, and the Troup Tigers moved to 3-0 on the season with a 49-38 win over Alba-Golden on Tuesday. Cason Mills added six for the Tigers. Carter Graves and Caden Graves scored five apiece, Jarett Castillo four, Braxton Barton, Tre Anderson and Carson Davenport three each, Hudson Harrell two and Shane Jasper one.

Tenaha advances in 22-14 win over Dawson
ATHENS, Texas (KTRE) - The Tenaha Tigers have advanced to the third round of the UIL playoffs following a 22-14 win over Dawson in Athens Thursday night. Tenaha’s defense stepped up first, when Dawson fumbled on their first play from scrimmage. Tenaha scored on the possession when Brikelian Kenny scored on the quarterback keeper to put the Tigers up 6-0.
