Petersburg Ward 7 race separated by 5 votes, recount possible
By Nov. 10, we should know one of two things about he outcome of Petersburg's Ward 7 city council election − who won or if there will be a recount to finalize it. Only five votes separated challenger Herbert Coulton Jr. and incumbent Arnold Westbrook Jr. after the ballots were tallied Tuesday, Nov. 3. "This is a fluidly changing environment as the process continues to unfold," Petersburg Registrar Dawn Wilmoth told The Progress-Index. "Election Day's end is just the 'born date' much like a starting point of results reporting. We have the early vote total, the absentees total received by Election Day total and the actual Election Day poll total all entered." Noon on Friday, Nov. 6 was the postmark deadline for absentee ballots to be back at the registrar's office to be included in the count.. Wilmoth said only three of the 63 absentees ballots still out for Ward 7 have been returned. The absentees returned by the noon deadline will be counted. Also, there are a total of 24 provisional ballots − ones
