The Crook County Cowboys came from behind to take a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Estacada in extra innings Monday afternoon in Tri-Valley Conference baseball action.

“We had a great team effort win tonight,” Crook County head coach Steele Bailey said of the road win. “We got the go ahead run on some heads up base running by Tyis Yustat. He was on third with the infield in. Hayden Forman hit a ground ball to short and they made the play at first, but the first baseman fell asleep and Tyis ran home.”

Bailey added that pitchers Austin Vaughan and Tyson Martinez both threw great.

Estacada scored a run in the first to take the early lead. The Cowboys tied things up with a run of their own in the second, then briefly took the lead with a run in the fourth inning. However, the Rangers scored a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

Crook County was able to tie the game with a run in the sixth and that's the way the game stayed until the top of the eighth inning when Yustat scored the go ahead run.

Led by Yustat, who went 3-4 at the plate with a triple the Cowboys finished with 10 hits in the game, while Estacada had just five hits. However, Crook County defenders made a trio of costly errors resulting in two of the three Ranger errors.

In addition to Yustat, Vaughan, Trenton Tucker and Carson Knudtson each had multiple hits as all three had two singles in the contest. The remaining Cowboy hit was a double from Clayton Dill. All five Estacada hits were singles.

Vaughan pitched six and two thirds innings, giving up five hits while striking out 10 and walking two. All three Estacada runs were scored while Vaughan was on the mound, however, just one of those runs was earned. Martinez pitched the final one and a third inning, striking out three, while not allowing a hit or a walk.

With the win the Cowboys are now 10-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while the Rangers fell to 6-8 overall and 0-4 in league. Crook County, which is ranked eighth in the OSAA power rankings, is tied for first place in the conference with fifth-ranked The Dalles, while Molalla is one game back in third place.

The Cowboys are at Madras, 8-6, 1-3 on Wednesday, then host the White Buffalos on Thursday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
