Former track coach sues Lake Oswego Schools after pushing for trans athlete rule change
A former head track & field coach at Lake Oswego High School filed a free speech violation lawsuit against the district, claiming that he was wrongfully fired after pushing for a change in the state rule that allows transgender athletes to compete against the gender that aligns with their gender identity.
Area athletes win regional Junior Olympics titles
Four South Coast athletes won titles in the recent Junior Olympics Northwest Regional track and field championships in Gresham. Mason Detzler of Myrtle Point, competing unattached, won the men’s (17-18 years old) discus with a throw of 167-11 and shot put with an effort of 57-9. Marley Petrey of Bandon, also unattached and competing in the same age group, won the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute and 4.74 seconds. ...

Canby woman named to collegiate sportsmanship team Jennifer Torres-Bermudez, from Canby, a member of the Linfield University women’s cross country program this year, was named to the 2023-24 All-Northwest Conference Sportsmanship team. Torres-Bermudez was among 19 student-athletes from Linfield University selected for displaying good sportsmanship throughout the season. A new head coach has been handed the reins in Corbett to help turn around a storied football program that has fallen on hard times. Jacob Phillips, a 2006 Barlow graduate who most recently served as the defensive coordinator at Centennial High School for four seasons, takes over from Sean Cease, filling a vacancy left in the offseason. The Canby High School boys and girls soccer program's are hosting its second summer youth camp on Aug. 5-8 at Cougar Stadium.
