ATV driver killed in U.P. accident; 11-year-old passenger survives
UPPER PENINSULA — A 33-year-old man from Chicago was killed in an ATV accident, officials said Tuesday. On Sunday around 8:15 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers from the Manistique Outpost were sent to Hemlock Trail in Thompson Township in Schoolcraft County for a 911 call of an ATV crash. Upon arrival, troopers found that a four-wheeler had overturned after losing control and had ejected both the driver and passenger, they said. The ATV then rolled over the driver, causing life-threatening injuries, troopers said. Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, however the driver, from Chicago, was pronounced dead at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital after being taken there by Manistique EMS, troopers said.

Feeding America plans distribution for Newberry and Gwinn Thursday
UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WLUC) - Feeding America West Michigan is working to ensure families have their shelves well stocked with food ahead of the Memorial Day holiday. The nonprofit organization has two food distribution events scheduled to take place throughout the day on Thursday. The first event is for residents in Newberry. It is located at the GCCP Dunlap Center at 6545 M-123. Distribution begins at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Middle school golf rules the Newberry Country Club
An impressive crop of young golfers is emerging in Newberry. The Newberry Middle School (NMS) boys golf team has been dominating, going undefeated for nearly two full seasons. Meanwhile, the NMS girls golf team is making plenty of noise on their own. Both groups hosted the meets at the Newberry Country Club last week and swept the competition on their home course.
Woman to stand trial in death of baby found in Mackinac County 27 years ago
ST. IGNACE, MI— A former Newberry woman will stand trial for the death of a newborn found in a Mackinac County pit toilet in 1997. Nancy Gerwatowski, 60, is charged with open murder, involuntary manslaughter, and concealing the death of an individual. In June of 1997, the remains of an infant were found in a toilet at Garnet Lake Campground in Hudson Township. Police investigated, but no leads were developed.

Come to Curtis Library’s Grand Opening
Curtis Public Library will host a two-day Grand Opening celebration Wednesday and Thursday, May 22 and 23. Michigan State Librarian, Randy Riley, is coming as guest of honor. Although Curtis Public Library was originally established in 1971, the library was re-established in the past year as an independent township library. They’ll do the work from 1 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. “We want to enhance the park and eventually build a pavilion, but we thought maybe we should cleanup the park and get people familiar with what we want to do,” said Yooper Youth leader Elizabeth Magnuson. “This park is beautiful, but has room to grow.”
