Doughnuts, coffee, books, ice cream & more: KC-area business updates for October

Kansas City saw many changes in local businesses this month, including a couple transitions. Among new openings: A luxury leather retail shop opened a new location and adjoining coffee shop, featuring aesthetic drinks and sweet treats in the shape of its purses. We also said goodbye to a dueling piano bar that had been opened in Kansas City’s Power and Light entertainment district for nearly 18 years. For transitions, a popular ice cream shop closed for the season, and two others moved into a food truck. Here are noteworthy openings and closing from around the metro this September that The Star has covered. Have restaurant or business news we should know about? Share it at kansascity.com/submit-news. Openings 3 of Cups, 101 W Cedar St. A general interest bookstore that sells games and book-themed gifts opened the first week of October, inside a Folk Victorian home in downtown Olathe. The shop offers several book clubs, events and even books for rent for book clubs. ChopMore!, 8700 E. 63rd St. The former Price Chopper is now a ChopMore!, a “straightforward, no-frills” grocery store opened Oct. 27. The concept has been in the works for over a year. Children's Mercy announces layoffs for 100+ employees: ‘We face rising costs'

Children’s Mercy announced Monday that it would eliminate 115 positions across its health system and transfer 473 other roles to an outside company. In a statement to The Star, the health care system said the cuts represented about 1.2% of its workforce. Most, it said, were in nonclinical, administrative, leadership and support roles. Children’s Mercy also said the 473 “revenue cycle and scheduling” roles would be moved to Ensemble Health Partners, but those positions would continue to support the health system. “Children’s Mercy is committed to providing exceptional care for patients, families, and our community and to expanding access to pediatric care close to home,” Children’s Mercy leaders said in a statement. “Like children’s hospitals nationwide, we face rising costs and reimbursement that has not kept pace. We continue to evolve our organizational structure to ensure we can remain one of only 28 independent, freestanding children’s hospitals in the country, focused on kids.” The announcement comes two weeks after Children’s Mercy said health plans offered through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace had excluded the pediatric health system as an in-network provider. The coverage change will take effect on Jan. 1, Children’s Mercy said. “Children’s Mercy wants to participate in ACA

Soda-flavored milk. Cotton candy milk. Both come in glass bottles, and many of those bottles go back to the farm to be washed and filled again. I love that this Missouri dairy treats its returnable milk bottles like boomerangs. You pay a deposit, bring the bottle back, and it heads right into the wash line.
