Kennewick to ask voters for $107M to rebuild 2 aging middle schools

Kennewick will replace two of its oldest middle schools, and upgrade old infrastructure and facilities across the district, if voters approve a $107 million bond measure set for the Feb. 9 special election ballot. The Kennewick School Board voted unanimously, 4-0, Wednesday night to submit the ballot resolution that will come before voters. Board member Brittany Gledhill was absent from the meeting. The funding would capture $61 million in expiring state match dollars, and allow the district to rebuild both Horse Heaven Hills Middle School and Highlands Middle School at half the burden to local taxpayers. Virtually every building in Kennewick School District would benefit from the bond’s passage, said assistant superintendent of operations Thomas Brillhart. The long-term borrowing would improve student health and safety, restrooms, technology, career and technical education, aging playgrounds and several other projects. Upgrades could also be made to Hawthorne Elementary and Washington Elementary, two schools built in the 1950s that are in need of major investment. “At the end of the day, districts can ask for a lot more. We’re only asking for what we could afford,” said Kennewick School Board President Gabe Galbraith. “We can’t pass up $61 million from the state that everyone

Expanded services, less driving for vets. Work starts on new Tri-Cities VA clinic.

Work has started to build the Kennewick VA Clinic , a Tri-Cities clinic that will be 10 times larger than the current one in the Richland Federal Building and offer far more services. “The impact of this clinic is going to be measured far beyond concrete, brick and mortar,” said Luke Strozewski, acting regional operations officer for the Veterans Administration health service area that includes Washington state, at a ceremonial groundbreaking Thursday. “It’s going to be measured by healthier veterans, stronger families and lives that have been improved because the care is available right here in their community,” he said. The new VA clinic building will have about 100,000-square feet, more than 10 times the size of the clinic now in Richland. It will offer not only primary care for veterans but expand offerings to include pharmacy, prosthetics, laboratory services, dental, audiology, optometry, radiology, home-based primary care and support for homeless veterans, all in a modern medical setting. Just this week local VA officials also heard that funding had been made available to offer some specialized cardiology care in the Tri-Cities. The result will be fewer trips for veterans to the Jonathan Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center in Walla Walla

The Franklin County undersheriff is winning a bid to be the next sheriff. Undersheriff Monty Huber and Connell Police Chief Chris Lee, both Republicans, are competing to replace outgoing Sheriff Jim Raymond in Tuesday’s election. The often outspoken sheriff announced his retirement earlier this year, and has thrown his support behind Huber. After the first night of counting, Huber has received 51%, or 7,796 votes, while Lee got 48%, or 7,223 votes. Write-in candidates received 1% of the vote. Huber has been a longtime fixture in the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. He’s spent 23 years working his way up from deputy to undersheriff. He’s served as a training officer, special investigations unit commander and SWAT commander. He’s been a part of the office’s reaccreditation process and helped create the bi-county sheriff’s posse. He’s also served as a U.S. Army Ranger and as a Connell city councilman. He said the sheriff’s office is in a good position right now. They are fully staffed and have more than 100 applicants on the waiting list. Chris Lee has spent more than 25 years in law enforcement including 16 years at the Richland Police Department.
