ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) – The roadwork on College Avenue and Davis Street is dampening the spirits of staff and customers at Haskins Gardens during its busiest season.

“We certainly understand the work has to happen. It just couldn’t be worse timing,” said Owner of Haskins Gardens Kim Haskins.

Extensive road work is ongoing in the City of Elmira. Both College Avenue and Davis Street are direct access points for Haskins Gardens.

“So far, our customers have been great and up until this week, you’ve been able to access us on College Ave. Monday through Friday, our side of the road is open. But, unfortunately they started construction on Davis as well. They’re tearing up that road and it’s closed from Washington to Roe and so the only way to access now is northbound and you have to do quite the detour to get here,” said Haskins.

With people commemorating Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, May is the garden center’s busiest month.

“We do a huge portion of our sales for the entire year. So, we really count on it to stay open through the summer and the fall,” said Haskins.

The Elmira Water Board is doing the work on College Avenue and the City of Elmira is doing the work on Davis Street.

“It’s going to be the whole month unfortunately. The only positive is that the construction does clear out at five o’clock or at the end of the day and it is open on the weekends as well,” said Haskins.

The Elmira Water Board says the project will go from Washington Avenue to Woodlawn Avenue and will take several months. We also reached out to the city, but have not heard back.
