Man arrested for DUI after telling police to “Take me to jail”

ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One man has been arrested for DUI following a traffic stop Saturday night.

According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at approximately 8:47 PM, a deputy was conducting road patrol along Isner Creek Road, in the Glenmore area of Elkins.

Police observed a gray in color Hyundai Elantra traveling along Isner Creek toward Glenmore Loop.  The vehicle was observed to have defective registration lights.

Police conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle along Glenmore Loop in the parking lot across from Aaron’s.

Police then made contact with the driver who was identified as Dustin Lee Wingfield.

An open beer can was observed in the vehicle. Police then asked Mr. Wingfield what he was drinking. Mr. Wingfield told police, “I had a couple beers earlier.”

Police say Wingfield was observed to be breathing very heavily and would not make eye contact with them.

Mr. Wingfield began getting upset with the police, raising his voice and crying. Mr. Wingfield advised the officer to “Take me to jail!”

Mr. Wingfield exited the vehicle after he was instructed. Police then conducted three standardized field sobriety tests on Mr. Wingfield.

Mr. Wingfield failed both tests.

Mr. Wingfield attempted the One Leg Stand and gave up after ten seconds and advised “I can’t do this”.

Mr. Wingfield consented to a preliminary breath test. The results of this breath test were .169.

Mr. Wingfield was placed under arrest and transported to Elkins Police Department for further processing.

Mr. Wingfield admitted to consuming a twelve-pack of beer throughout the day.

A secondary breath test was conducted on Mr. Wingfield, the results from this test showed Mr. Winfield had an alcohol content of .142.

Mr. Wingfield was charged with Driving Under the Influence and transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail to await arraignment by the Randolph County Magistrate.
