    What's Up: Four National Day of Prayer events set for Thursday

    TODAYHistory for Lunch

    Museum of the Albemarle will host its monthly History for Lunch program at noon in the Gaither Auditorium. J.E.B. “Jeb” Stuart will discuss and sign copies of his book, “Big Al and Me: Partners in Mischief, Capers, and Shenanigans.”

    Second primary

    Early voting continues for the May 14 Republican second primary for lieutenant governor and state auditor. Only voters registered Republican or unaffiliated who voted in the March 5 GOP primary may vote. Area boards of election will be open for voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through May 10. Early voting will also be held on Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Library programs

    The Pasquotank Library will host a program on “superheroes” for kids ages 1-2 with an adult today and kids ages birth to 1 on Thursday. All classes are at 10 a.m.

    Fleet Reserve Assn.

    Fleet Reserve Association Branch 293 will meet at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6060 at 1433 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, at 7 p.m.

    Red Cross blood drive

    The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at the Pasquotank County High School gym at 1064 Northside Road from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    THURSDAY

    Day of Prayer

    National Day of Prayer services will be held at First Christian Church at 800 Beech St., Elizabeth City, at 8 a.m.; at Corinth Baptist Church, 1035 U.S. Highway 17, Elizabeth City, at noon; at the Historic Chowan County Courthouse in Edenton at noon; and at Towne South Church, at 2224 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, at 7 p.m.

    Blood drive

    The Blood Connection’s mobile blood drive scheduled for April 25 has been rescheduled for Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the John Wood Foreman Center parking lot. To schedule an appointment, visit https://donate.thebloodconnection.org/donor/schedules/sponsor_code.

    Jewelry show

    College of The Albemarle-Dare will host “Fusion: 2024 Fashion Show of Jewelry & Wearable Sculpture” at 205 Highway 64 S., Manteo, at 5:30 p.m. The show will feature jewelry and wearable sculptures crafted by COA students, alumni and employees.

    SATURDAY

    Newbold-White House

    The Perquimans County Restoration Center will reopen the Newbold-White House in Hertford for the season starting Saturday. Guided tours and gift shop hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Saturday through Oct. 26. Other tour days can be arranged with two weeks notice by calling 252-426-7567.

    Paddle for the Border

    The 19th annual Paddle for the Border canoeing/kayaking event will launch from the canal bridge at the Dismal Swamp State Park in South Mills at 9 a.m. Participants will paddle 7.5 miles along the Dismal Swamp Canal to the Ballahack Boat Ramp in Chesapeake, Virginia. The event is sold out.

    Scouts’ doughnut sale

    Boy Scout Troop 150 of Hertford will sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts outside the Walmart Supercenter and Tractor Supply in Elizabeth City, starting at 9 a.m. Cost is $15 a box.

    SUNDAY

    Albemarle Chorale

    The Albemarle Chorale will present “A Woman’s Voice: Music by Women” at First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City at 4 p.m. The program will showcase music written by women spanning the years from classical to contemporary. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.

    ‘Choosing to Participate’

    Museum of the Albemarle will open its newest poster display, “Choosing to Participate,” Wednesday, May 8. Developed for middle-school and high-school students, the posters are intended to “inspire people of all ages to create positive social change,” the museum said.

    History for Lunch

    Museum of the Albemarle will host a History for Lunch program on Wednesday, May 8, at noon in the Gaither Auditorium Wednesday, May 8, at noon. Author Kianna Alexander will discuss the life of Josephine N. Leary, a Chowan County woman who built a real estate empire after emancipation in North Carolina.

    Pasquotank Dems

    The Pasquotank County Democratic Party will hold a general membership meeting in Courtroom A of the Pasquotank Courthouse Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. Contact: 252-335-7832.

    Pasquotank GOP

    The Pasquotank County Republican Party will meet in the First Christian Church fellowship hall Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. State Sen. Bobby Hanig, R-Currituck, will be the speaker.

    The American Red Cross will host a blood drive at Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church fellowship center at 241 Sawyers Creek Road, Camden, Thursday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and in the Perquimans County High School gym lobby at 305 Edenton St., Road, Hertford, Friday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Run with Mary 5K

    The Run with Mary 5K for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness is a 5K fundraiser that honors Mary Morrison Gillam, a Camden County mother of three and runner who died from pancreatic cancer. Runners will start from Waterfront Park May 11 at 10 a.m. The entry fee is $35 and all proceeds go to cancer research at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where Gillam received care. A post-race celebration will be held at Seven Sounds Brewing Company. For tickets, visit the Run with Mary 5K website.

    Spring Flea Market

    Perquimans Outdoors

    The Perquimans County Tourism Development Authority will sponsor the program, Perquimans Outdoors, at the Perquimans County Recreation Center, May 17-19.

    NC Potato Festival

    The three-day 2024 NC Potato Festival will be held in downtown Elizabeth City will be held May 17-19. The event features amusement rides, an auto and bike show, free french fries, food and game vendors, live musical entertainment. Featured events include the National Potato Peeling Contest and the Little Miss Tater Tot Contest. Hours Friday are 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, www.ncpotatofestival.com.

    Rootle Roadster Tour

    Museum of the Albemarle will host a visit by the PBS North Carolina’s Rootle Roadster Tour for families that include exceptional children Friday, May 17, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Register through the Albemarle Alliance for Children and Families. The visit continues Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday, May 19, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

    Sunday Garden Stroll

    The Chowan County Master Gardeners will host a Sunday Garden Stroll Sunday, May 19, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

    Rose Buddies exhibit

    Museum of the Albemarle will open a banner exhibit celebrating 41 years of the Rose Buddies Tuesday, May 21, from 5 p.m. 7 p.m. Elizabeth Hudson, editor, and Rebecca Woltz, writer, of “Our State” Magazine will be the guests for a reception.

    Guardian ad Litem
