EDENTON — John A. Holmes High School’s Herren Project held its Healthy Soles 5K run in downtown Edenton on Saturday, April 27, with a record 93 runners navigating a course starting near Edenton’s Farmer’s Market and continuing past Edenton’s waterfront.

The Herren Project is a student club at Holmes High School that receives considerable community support from non-faculty adults. Kelley Duruman, a community volunteer working with the Herren Project, supervised the race.

“There are a couple of things we’re trying to accomplish,” Duruman explained. “This is our primary fundraiser, providing funds to do things with our student members throughout the school year. The other thing is that we try to bring the community together in a healthy way. We promote good mental health and discourage substance abuse.”

The race started and finished near St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, made its way to Waterfront Park, then down Blount and W. King streets, up to East Eden Street, E. Queen Street, up Church Street, and back to the finish line. On hand for the event were a color guard from Holmes High’s JROTC unit and members of the Holmes High Marching Band.

Jennifer Lawrence and her daughter, Anna Nelson, were among the competitors. Anna was visiting her mother, having traveled to Edenton from Philadelphia for a visit. Running together is a tradition for them.

“We both come from a family of runners; I ran in high school and later in college. We usually like to do runs together,” Anna said.

“In fact, it’s a family tradition,” said Jennifer. “I used to coach her in high school, and my dad is a runner. We’ve always been runners.”

Pete Gibson of Murfreesboro came in first overall. Anna Nelson took first place in the women’s race. Complete race results can be viewed by age category and time at https://runsignup.com/Race/Results/62673#resultSetId-452483;perpage:100.

But it wasn’t all about winners and times. Children, mothers pushing baby carriages, and at least one contestant in a wheelchair competed in the event.
