Sawyer laid foundation for Wetumpka’s future
The best way to honor Don Sawyer is to carry on his vision — promote the arts and Wetumpka. I’ve been reporting on Wetumpka for a few years now and Don was one of the first to welcome me to the community. He did it in his own way just like he did with everyone I talked to Friday after the news of Don’s death made its way through Wetumpka and the arts community.
Two area animal shelters stop adoptions amid dog flu outbreak
The Montgomery Humane Society has closed its dog adoptions after an outbreak of dog influenza infected the canines. The illness has spread to all adoptable dogs and some puppies, said Lea Turbert, the humane society's marketing manager. The Humane Society of Elmore County is also impacted by the outbreak. The shelter has suspended adoptions and is not accepting owner-surrender dogs at this time. The Prattville/Autauga Humane Society continues to function regularly. ...
Wetumpka art legend Don Sawyer dies
Look anywhere in Wetumpka and there is Don Sawyer’s mark — the Hollywood Fish. Almost always on a yellow background, the fish is wearing sunglasses and grinning to the world. Look close enough, and you’re likely to find a cross and a church in the painting. Those paintings will now stand as memories as Sawyer died Friday after a battle with cancer.
