Yolo County election update: Pritchard concedes in 3rd District, hotel tax leading

Woodland City Councilmember Mayra Vega widened her lead Friday over supervisor’s deputy Dotty Pritchard in the race for the Yolo County Board of Supervisors’ 3rd District seat, a day after Pritchard conceded the election. Vega led by 1,093 votes in the latest unofficial returns released Friday afternoon by the Yolo County Office of Elections, receiving 55.4% of the vote compared with Pritchard’s 44.6%. Her lead grew by 214 votes since election night , when she was ahead by 879 votes. On Thursday, Pritchard conceded the race to replace outgoing Supervisor Mary Vixie Sandy in a social media post. “Things didn’t work out the way we wanted,” Pritchard wrote. “But I congratulate Ms. Vega on her win. Let’s get behind her for the betterment of Yolo County.” Vega’s lead grew slightly with Friday’s updated results. With 46.1% of votes counted, Vega received 55.4% of votes and Pritchard won 44.6%. In June, Pritchard finished first in a three-candidate primary, receiving 40% of the vote to Vega’s 32%. Xotchl Rodriguez, who did not qualify for the November ballot, received 28%. Early precinct-level returns suggested Vega drew stronger support in more densely populated parts of the district, including downtown Woodland and the Bryte and

Sac City Unified, opponents react as Measure M remains below two-thirds threshold

With ballots counted from only about 30% of eligible voters in the Sacramento City Unified School District, Measure M was winning a slim majority of early votes but remained far short of the two-thirds support needed to pass. The measure, which would impose an annual $95-per-parcel tax expected to raise about $10 million for SCUSD’s special education and early intervention programs, faced opposition over the added cost to property owners. Nikki Milevsky-Davis, president of the Sacramento City Teachers Association, said the union was encouraged that a majority of votes counted so far supported the measure. By early Wednesday, about 51.6% of votes were in favor of the measure. “It’s unfortunate that a two-thirds requirement will deprive Sac City students of the resources they so richly deserve,” she added. SCTA, along with the California Teachers Association and the National Education Association, supported Measure M as a way to help the district cover its increasing special education costs, a challenge shared by districts across the state. The financially distressed district’s special education costs have become one of its fastest growing expenses, with its unrestricted general fund contribution rising from $73.6 million in 2018-19 to a projected $172.3 million in 2025-26. The district

Sacramento City Unified school leaders clash with city, police over ICE notification

Sacramento City Unified School District leaders are pressing city officials to notify schools when federal immigration agents are operating nearby. SCUSD Superintendent Cancy McArn sent a letter Friday morning to City Manager Maraskeshia Smith requesting a meeting with Smith, Mayor Kevin McCarty, interim Police Chief Zachary Bales and several City Council members to “strengthen communication” with the district’s Safe Schools department. “Recent ICE enforcement activity, including the well-documented activity near Ethel Phillips Elementary School, has raised significant concerns about the fear and uncertainty experienced by our families and the lack of communication with the district,” she wrote. McArn’s letter was a formal request for a meeting, but school board trustee and civil rights attorney Jasjit Singh took a firmer stance amid surging federal immigration enforcement in the capital region. “Communicate with the school district — we don’t need kids walking past masked individuals holding guns,” he said. Singh and two other trustees addressed the City Council last week after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were spotted near the south Sacramento school, causing confusion and concern among students and families during afterschool pickup. They asked city officials to notify the district when Sacramento police become aware of immigration enforcement

‘Stay tuned': McCarty pledges help to speed up Sacramento State's downtown campus

The state of California may need more than two years to ready a site where Sacramento State plans to eventually build a downtown campus. The state plans to demolish three mammoth buildings spanning multiple downtown blocks. Still, Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty said Thursday that the city will look to ease the process. “We’re working with the university to fast-track their downtown campus,” McCarty said during his annual “State of the City” address. “So stay tuned. News coming.” The potential timeline for a downtown campus was detailed in a recent report by the California Department of General Services, which serves as the state’s business manager. It is the most definitive timeline for the project since Sacramento State President Luke Wood announced in January that Meta had donated $50 million toward the demolition of the three buildings. “It’s still definitely in DGS’s court for some time,” Wood said in an interview last week. The buildings occupy multiple city blocks along Capitol Mall between Seventh and Ninth streets, near where many of the city’s high-profile firms have offices. The demolition process would begin in fall 2027 and last 18 months, the document said. The university has said its plans include housing , a
