Sacramento-area headlines: a CSU labor deal and deadly car crash near Galt

From labor talks at California’s largest public university system to a Halloween costume controversy and a deadly rural crash, here’s a roundup of recent Sacramento-area news. The California State University system reached a tentative agreement with the CSU Employees Union , which represents about 14,500 staff including custodians, nurses and IT specialists. The deal includes a salary step system and a $3,575 bonus in December, with members voting by Nov. 17, even as the faculty union prepares for a possible strike. The Onyx Club in Roseville said it kicked out a man wearing a Nazi armband on Halloween night after a customer complained, pushing back against social media accusations that staff had tolerated the costume. The bar said the man had concealed the armband under a jacket when he entered and was removed after an altercation with another customer. A driver was killed and a 32-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child were seriously injured in a crash Tuesday evening on Alta Mesa Road near Galt. The California Highway Patrol said the Honda Pilot driver turned left into the path of a southbound Chevrolet Silverado about 6:50 p.m.; the pickup driver suffered minor injuries. Sacramento restaurant closed over rodent droppings. What else did inspectors find?

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to a Japanese fusion restaurant after finding about 20 rodent droppings throughout the facility. Additionally, 12 restaurants were cited for unattended raw chicken, gunk found on a can opener and a missing food safety certificate. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 29, through Wednesday, Nov. 4. If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email The Sacramento Bee at servicejournalists@sacbee.com . The Becerra era and Raman’s ‘earthquake’ in LA

TRANSITION BEGINS — In the five months between Xavier Becerra ’s come-from-behind primary victory and his general election win, he and his circle could deflect questions about his coming administration. California can only have one governor at a time, they said, and he wasn’t taking anything for granted. But now that voters have officially made him their next governor, everyone in Sacramento is racing to get some answers about what comes next: Who will Becerra hire and appoint? Which interest groups will be ascendant? What policies will he prioritize? The lobbyists, union officials and legislative leaders at his victory party offer some hints. Among the VIP’s circulating in West Sacramento were Becerra team members, including campaign hands Robbie Abelon, Kyle Layman and Lindsey Cobia — an erstwhile top Gavin Newsom deputy — and unofficial counselors like Arsenio Mataka, a former aide from Becerra’s attorney general days who focused on environmental issues. As we’ve noted elsewhere , Becerra’s sphere also includes adviser Courtni Pugh, longtime aide Liz Saldivar, veteran politico Karen Skelton, and policy adviser Nicole Elliott (another Newsom alum). Some of Sacramento’s most powerful interest groups did not endorse Becerra until it was evident he’d prevail. That made his early

Sacramento weekend roundup: Yuba City Sikh parade, museum's $2.5M plans & more

From a decades-old parade in Yuba City to a multimillion-dollar museum overhaul to Tahoe National Forest Christmas tree permits going on sale, here’s a closer look at top Sacramento Bee stories from over the weekend. Thousands turned out in Yuba City on Sunday for the 2026 Sutter County Nagar Kirtan, the annual Sikh Parade first held in 1980, featuring a procession with horses, floats and electric motorcycles, free meals for visitors and devotional music. Participants described the day as a celebration of seva — selfless service — and a chance to pass traditions of kindness and equality to the next generation. The California Automobile Museum at 2200 Front St. in Sacramento is planning a $2.5 million renovation set to break ground in spring 2027, with a new entryway, cafe, gift shop and expanded exhibit space. Executive Director Karen McClaflin said the museum has secured $1.8 million so far and will raise the rest through brick sales and a public campaign. Tahoe National Forest Christmas tree permits went on sale Nov. 1 through Recreation.gov, priced at $10 per tree with a two-tree limit and a $2.50 registration fee. Permits are valid through Dec. 31 across four ranger districts, with a 20-foot

Yolo County Measure X results: Voters weigh higher hotel tax in 2026

A proposal to increase hotel taxes in unincorporated Yolo County drew majority support in early election night returns Tuesday, as voters considered a plan to generate additional revenue for county services. As of 10 p.m., Measure X had 60.7% yes votes and 39.3% no votes, according to unofficial Yolo County election results. The first results reflected ballots mailed before Election Day, with more votes left to be counted. The measure needed a simple majority to pass. The proposed tax increase on hotels and short-term rentals would raise the rate from 8% to 12% in unincorporated Yolo County. It would apply to hotel rooms, Airbnb rentals and other short-term lodging outside city limits. County officials estimated the increase would generate about $250,000 annually for the county’s general fund. The money could support public safety, emergency preparedness, health and human services and other county programs. The tax would be paid by lodging guests, not directly by property owners, and would remain in place until ended by voters. Hotel tax rates in Davis and West Sacramento were already set at 12%. The measure came as Yolo County faced a persistent budget deficit. County officials reported a financial shortfall of more than $35 million

Woman dies from flu in Sacramento County, first death of 2026-27 season

Public health officials on Wednesday announced a woman died from complications related to influenza, making it Sacramento County’s first flu-related death of the 2026-27 season. The woman who died was in her 50s with underlying chronic medical conditions who was not vaccinated against the flu, according to a news release from the Sacramento County Public Health. Officials said the woman developed respiratory symptoms in mid-October and was diagnosed with influenza A. She was hospitalized a few days later and died shortly after. “This is a stark reminder that the flu can cause serious illness and even death, but vaccination remains our best defense,” county Public Health Officer Dr. Phuong Luu said in the news release. “Everyone aged 6 months and older should get vaccinated for influenza now, especially with flu circulating very high in California currently.” Health officials said the county’s first flu-related death this season comes about a month earlier than last year, a death that was reported in late November 2025. They encouraged all residents to protect themselves by getting vaccinated this fall. Vaccines are key in preventing and protecting against respiratory viruses including flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), health officials said. Sacramento County Public Health
