EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (WKBN) – The Lewis and Clark Trust made a stop in East Liverpool Thursday.

The mayor and safety service director were presented with signs commemorating the city as a stop on the Lewis and Clark trail.

The 4,900-mile trail passes through the Ohio Valley and the markers designate the area as one of the trail’s historic sights. It’s a drivable route that tourists can follow with stops at historic locations mentioned by Lewis and Clark during their expedition across the country.

“East Liverpool holds a unique position in that the point of beginning was noted in the Lewis and Clark journals as he passed through here in 1803 with his keelboat. So it holds a very important story here,” said Jim Mallory, vice-chairman of the Lewis and Clark Trust.

The point of beginning that Mallory is referencing is where the national federal survey system began. It sits in the city’s east end, right on the border with Pennsylvania.
